XOBDO and Assam AI Initiative Launch Free Assamese AI Text-to-Speech Platform “Project Pathok”
Guwahati, 16th May :The volunteer-driven language technology initiative XOBDO.ORG, in collaboration with the Assam AI Initiative (AAII-আই), has launched “Project Pathok,” a free Assamese AI Text-to-Speech (TTS) web application aimed at making Assamese digital content more accessible to the public.
The newly launched platform converts Assamese Unicode text into natural-sounding speech using artificial intelligence. Users can either paste Assamese text directly into the application or provide a webpage link to listen to the content in Assamese audio form. The developers said the tool has been designed to support education, accessibility, digital content consumption, research, and the broader adoption of Assamese language technology.
Project Pathok is powered by “Xobdo Boroxa 1.0,” a neural Assamese Text-to-Speech model trained on nearly four hours of high-quality Assamese speech data. One of the key features of the platform is that it operates directly within the user’s browser. After the initial loading, the voice model is stored on the user’s device, enabling continued use even without an internet connection. The developers highlighted that the system does not require users’ text or audio data to be sent to external servers during speech generation, thereby ensuring user privacy.
According to the development team, the initiative is part of a broader community-driven effort to strengthen Assamese digital language infrastructure and promote accessible AI tools for regional languages. They expressed hope that the platform would help more people access, listen to, and engage with Assamese digital content. Technical coordination and development of the project were carried out by Team Assam AI Initiative and Dr. Parismita Gogoi, DUIET, Dibrugarh University. The Assamese voice for the platform was contributed by Mrs. Barsha Bandita, while initial data collection and logistics support were provided by Dr. Anjal Bora and Mr. Abinash Hatikakoti. Project Pathok has been made freely available to the public. In addition, for desktop users using the Chrome browser, the team has also released an Assamese Text-to-Speech Chrome Extension. The extension allows users to select Assamese text on any webpage and listen to it instantly, or use a right-click option for full-page reading.
