Dear Friends,
We welcome the publication of Asamiya Jatiya
Abhidhan as the fruition of the Herculean labour of a collective
formed by a galaxy of Assamese lexicographers ,linguists ,academicians
and social activists .The first volume of the Abhidhan comprises of
50,000 words while the complete four volume corpus would consist of
2,00,000+words in contrast with the less than 50,000 words of earlier
dictionaries.Assamese vocabulary has been considerably increased and
enriched by the inclusion of words drawn from Kamrupi,Goalparia and
Darangi dialects,tribal languages,ethnic togues,scientific and
technological domains ,all written sources, colloqualism, folk and oral
literature and so on and so forth. This being the first ever
unilingual, comprehensive, scientific and encyclopedic dictionary of the
language, the Abhidhan is fortunate enough to use a software designed
by Indrakanta Dutta of USA.
The publication of the dictionary has unleashed a
very vibrant and prolonged poemic around a gamut of issues involving
lexicography,language,society,sanskritization,religion,ethnicity,tribes,
dialects,regionalitity etc.etc..In fact nearly 1,00,000 words have
already been published in this prolonged poemic which is really a
healthy sign.
But lately an ominous and sinister design has emerged
with the burning of the dictionary within the precincts of the Gauhati
University by a handful of "reseach scholars".We condemn the burning
of the dictionary as well as the effigy of Dr. Debabrata Sharma, its
chief-editor by these fascist thugs. Each and every Assamese and lover
of Assam must rise up on this occasion to condemn this act of
vandalism.Let us  welcome vibrant democratic debate and reject all
fascist tendencies that seek to burn a book--that too a dictionary-the
mother of all books.Let good sense prevail.
[ Please sign up here and forward it to your friends
and return to us for circulation in Assamese media]

Sushanta,

While I agree with the first few paragraphs of the mail, I can not agree to the last part.

I do not support any kind of vandalism or going against the law. However in my opinion, burning the dictionary in public after buying it legally from the shop with the appropriate money OR carefully burning effigy of somebody after making it with own effort and money,  without destroying/harming anything or anybody else is not vandalism... rather an accepted way of protest in a vibrant democratic society.

You can not call somebody 'fascist thugs' if their opinions do not coincide with yours !! Moreover, who knows who really has 'an ominous and sinister design', apparently every opposing parties claiming the same... So, even though I agree with most of the other parts of the mail, I can not sign the mail.

I believe in pluralism. We are different, our thinkings are different. It is quite natural. I have not seen the Asamiya Jatiya Abhidhan myself. However, based on various reports I read and with my limited knowledge, I make this humble proposition: With respect to the Asamiya Jatiya Abhidhan's simplified Assamese spellings, we can certainly have two versions - Traditional Assamese and Simplified Assamese... (something like Traditional Chinese vs. Simplified Chinese). I see no problem for both systems to coexist !!

Cheers,
Bikram

Sushanta & Mafruja,
I do have the opinion similar to Bikram. I could not sign in the mail as I am not comfortable with the description of it. Yesterday, few people burn the symbolic funeral of the current CM along with four other MLAs. I believe this one of the strong ways to protest in democracy. Moreover, the content of the mail is very much provocative. Therefore, kindly don't include my name in it.

Dear
Bikram & Biraj
I can understand your points. I've forward the suggestion to the team which initiated the signature program. I think they will not have any problem to edit the draft. Let see what others suggest.
I also do support Bikrams words," we can certainly have two versions - Traditional Assamese and Simplified Assamese... (something like Traditional Chinese vs. Simplified Chinese). I see no problem for both systems to coexist !!"

But Bikram, the way campaign against the said  Dictionary is going on in the media there are every causes  to believe that the opponents don't want  to co-exist with the ' Simplified Assamese.'

Here some one have to stand up and raise their voice.
Stand up in favor of creativity and new ideas. They are not denying some of  their faults. They should have enough support and motivation to keep going ahead and make things corrected.

I can cite a personal example here. When we published the very first issue of Pragyan, some of our colleagues demanded  not to distribute it. Because it was full of errors and not so decorated as it's today. But, our team was determined. The team decided, if we bow down to every  criticism and   stop distribution we can't continue. And the rest is history.
Once there was an outside attempt to disassociate me from the team. That time my friends anticipated a physical attack on me as well. Luckily, that didn't happen. But, I was signed out from the very third issue of 5th year  I'm not sure to say that we'll not face these type  of obstacles in future as well. Knowingly or unknowingly we may make mistakes anytime, anywhere. What we need is 'right to make errors' to get things corrected. That's all.
So, I can feel the pain of the team of Jatiya Abhidhan. I'm sure the way their thought process is working now  the second part of the dictionary will be welcomed in a bigger way.
