Dear all,

I am sure all of you have heard the word 'heri' spoken in regular conversation. Can anyone say what exactly would it mean?

Manjil,

I think,  'heri'  is an interesting and unique word in Assamese... probably not found in any other language.
It takes place of Subject Object as well as Verb. E.g. some "valid" Assamese sentences are ....
1. Heriye herik heri buli kole.
2. Heliye herik heri korile.
etc.
As you know, it is used when the speaker knows what to say, but it is not immediately comming to his mind.
In English conversation, people generally replace it with humming usually written/reprented as "hmm..."

Likr to hear opinion of other members.
Thanks,
Bikram

Dear Manjil,

I have tried to give you a brief meaning of the word হেৰি. Probably, we are having it's meaning in XOBDO.

হেৰি (অব্যয়):নিজতকৈ মান্য মানুহক মতা সম্বোধনাৰ্থক শব্দ

A vocative particle used in addressing a superior; synonymous to English "HEY, HELLO"

I do agree with Bikram in this aspect. It has also those meanings as listed by him. It is also used in when someone feels to be in dilemma or disfluency.

Dear All,

I have read one article somewhere. The author was describing a
situation when a foreigner friend asked him the Assamese counterpart
for the word DARLING/HONEY. He was visiting his friends home in Assam.
The Assamese friend was in great trouble. Then the foreigner friend
gave a smile and told that he knew the word. It is 'HERA' and 'HERI'.
When the Assamese friend asked how did he know, the foreigner friend
replied that he noticed the frequent use of these words in their day
to day conversation.

These incident may be funny, but there is a logic behind the
statement given by the foreigner friend. " Hey Honey -> Hera xunisane?
"

Cheers,

Pankaj
