Bikramda,
I have posted it in the said discussion. It is as follows. I will be happy to see more contribution from other members which may help in resolving the issue.

"From my childhood I was having the conception that the নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ is the Assamese synonym of Hindi चीता. The English word CHEETAH (Acinonyx jubatus) also originates from the Hindi word चीता, derived from Sanskrit word CHITRAKA. Moreover, the Asiatic cheetah, that available in the Indian subcontinent, was also famous by the name HUNTING LEOPARD during British colonial times in India. So, there may be a scope that নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ stands for the CHEETAH. Moreover, it is observed that all the LEOPARDs are not having spotted skin, eg. clouded leopard. This may be one of the reasons that few literatures are available with the Assamese synonym of CHEETAH as নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ. I have heard similar kind of opinion from some local village people. The grandfather of our neighbour was also killed by CHEETAH which they used tell as killed by নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ. It was happened before independence.

I think it will be good if some other members also come forward with their opinion."

I like to request Pankaj not to take it more seriously. Probably, you are thinking the problem in a different way as if the conflict is between CHEETAH <-------> LEOPARD . But the conflict is like নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ <-------> CHEETAH. Anyway, please help in resolving the issue.

Hi,

I have given detailed information on this issue. I have also consulted with Dhritiman Das, Research Fellow, The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore. His field of research has been conservation of Tigers, Leopard and  herpetofauna . I am absolutely sure that  নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ is NOT the Assamese synonym of Hindi चीता. चीता is  CHEETAH. Sometimes people confused with  CHEETAH and নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ and think that CHEETAH = নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ.  This is wrong.

We see appearance of নাহৰফুটুকী বাঘ in public places frequently and published in news papers. We know that CHEETAH is an extinct species in India. They are planning to reintroduce it. I am again giving a link in Wildlife Trust of India, WTI website (I used to work with WTI before) for those people who has still confusion regarding this matter.
http://www.wti.org.in/current-news/091007_MoEF_approves_cheetah_reintroduction_roadmap_preparation.html

So, these are my view points supported by scientific evidence and data. Rest up to the people who makes decision. But personally, I don't agree to the point that Assamese synonym of Hindi चीता. Absolutely a wrong idea.

Regards,

Pankaj
