Hello Tim,

We would like to engage with someone on the developer team to inquire about the XNAT roadmap? What is the future of XNAT concerning compatibility with supported versions of Java and Tomcat on newer operating systems? If you are not the right person, can you direct us to someone that can talk with us?

Sincerely,

Jose Villamizar

The core team is currently being led by Flywheel.  Will Horton can comment on the roadmap.

1.9 was a huge step in this direction.  We upgraded and/or removed most of the dependencies which had security issues (see the release notes).  The next step was the java update, which several people on the team have been working on.  I don't have the latest information there (Will can comment), but my understanding is that this is a solvable problem and work was already underway to do so.  Given Flywheel is managing the R01 that governs core XNAT development, they have final say on the roadmap/timeline.

I agree that this is a pivotal fix and one way or another, it has to happen.

Jose, just to provide you with a snapshot of our planned work and work in progress, we are working on a development stack of XNAT that uses Java 21 and Tomcat 11. Our work so far indicates that it will be a feasible upgrade, but we are still scoping out the extent of required changes – to our code and to our automated test suite. Once we have that scope defined, we’ll be publishing a roadmap with a projected release date.

Regards,

Will

Will,

Thank you so much for your response. Definitely, this is great news! Our campus is really pushing us to keep systems updated and in compliance with security. As an example our PROD system is running PostgreSQL 12 which reached EOL a week or so ago.

While performing a new install using Debian 12 , Java 8 / PostgreSQL 14+ and Apache Tomcat 9.0.97. The .war file does not seems to be unpacking successfully.  We are getting http status 404 not found with a lot of these messages:

06-Nov-2024 10:00:04.086 INFO [main] org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig.deployWAR Deploying web application archive [/opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT.war]
06-Nov-2024 10:00:04.220 SEVERE [main] org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig.deployWAR Error deploying web application archive [/opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT.war]

Can someone in this group directed us to a detailed step by step process to install XNAT? We are having a lot of issues configuring several new production and development servers using Debian 12 / Java 8 / PostgreSQL 14+ and Apache Tomcat 9.0.96. Perhaps we are missing some config setting or perhaps something simple.

Cheers!

Jose Villamizar

We don't have a time set yet.  There have been a lot of changes over the holidays that we are eager to process and share.  More info in the coming days.

In the meantime, I'd love to reconnect.  Feel free to grab some time on my calendar:
