Display thumbnail instead of live preview

Hello,

I'm trying to show a set of images instead of the live preview.  Maybe display the product thumbnails instead of the live preview and refresh preview?

What would be the best way to try and achieve something like this?

Would be even better if the thumbnail page changes as the user navigates through the different stages. 

We can keep the PDF Proof that generates the live preview as the only place where users see their dynamic product with updated values.

Sounds like it should be a feature request. I can't think of any way to achieve it with work-arounds...
