Hello. I am having a font issue with documents that use Arial MT. The version I am using is a true type font that is embedded into our pdf output from XMPIE. The PDF document looks fine, and all fonts are embedded, but the digital press will have problems with the font on random pages of the document, where some text boxes will print fine and others default to courier on the printed page. We are currently running XMPie uCreate Print
Version 12.4.

If I can get any tips or guidance on this issue it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!
CB

Arial MT is a bad font. You can convert the PDF to postscript and then remake the PDF to see if that works. Otherwise, you can create a folder in the InDesign folder on the server (or your desktop) and put all the versions of Arial MT that you use in those folders.

My advice is to recreate the artwork with a true Helvetica or another similar sans serif in an Opentype formant. If your Arial MT is a conversion from another font format or platform it will really need to be replaced.

Thanks for your quick response! Do you think that If I replace the font with another version of Arial... Instead of using "Arial MT", could that fix the problem? The customer is intent on using Arial.

If Microsoft has an Opentype version of the font then you should be good to go.

Arial MT seems to be the original postscript version so if you are using a TTF version that is probably a conversion and the reason why you are having trouble. I would get Arial otf or ttf from Microsoft and see if that works. Just watch the text flow in case things shift while you update the fonts.

good luck,
Bob

We've had some font issues for several years with our Printer RIP, as well. Any True Type font can spell BAD NEWS (OpenType=good).
I sub ALL Arials/Helveticas with Helvetica Neue LT Std (We have the full suite of these as OTF (Open-Type Font), so about 50 styles (Bold, Condensed, Extended, Ital, BoldItal, Medium, Black, Heavy, etc).
When I say "sub", I mean I substitute it in the client native INDD. Static (not variable stuff), as well as variable. That seems to fix the random "courier" result.

Thanks, all good information! I am going to replace the arial mt with a OT version of arial and see if that has better results. It seems to happen so randomly that it is very tough to predict or catch when a problem will occur! I appreciate the help!
