We have a composite product with an upload component so customers can upload their own files for printing.  Is there a way to obtain the trim box size (width and height) and/or crop box size of the customer's uploaded file in the Excel pricing so that we can price the product properly?  In this particular case, we are using a wide format printer so the stock width e.g. 44 inches, will be known at order time.  We would like to calculate how many of the customer's uploaded document will fit across the sheet and how long the sheet will need to be to accommodate the requested quantity.  Once we know output sheet width and length, we can calculate price.

If you turn on Excel pricing on the upload product (the one that is used on your composite) you will find that the "PricesData_Upload_Template.xlsx" includes a table "actual page size" that gives you width and height of each page in the uploaded document in millimetres. This gives you the necessary information to calculate the price based on the physical size of the uploaded document. Remember that the upload product spreadsheet price is added to the composite product spreadsheet price.

Thanks Steve.  I have a few follow-up questions:

  • The table is named "Actual Paper Size" not "Actual Page Size".  Is it the size of the PDF Crop Box?  Media Box?  Art Box?  Trim Box?
  • Unlike all of the other fields in the pricing spreadsheets e.g. the "Page Enumeration" table, the " Actual Paper Size" table nor any of its columns have named ranges.  This means the table cannot be moved on the sheet which is problematic for us.  We rely on named ranges.  I think I will need to file a bug on this.
  • The width and height dimensions are given in mm.  Can these units be changed to inches or do we have to convert ourselves?
  • The documentation says, "Actual Paper Size" is a "Composite product specific settings" but it is as you pointed out, it is an Upload product specific setting

  • I was going from memory of last use (which was several years ago) so I consider myself "close enough for an old bloke". I don't know the answer to which box is used. If you want a definitive answer. you should log a support case with XMPie. But, what I did in the meantime was to setup a simple PDF with crop, art, trim and bleed boxes of different sizes. Turned on Excel price debugging, then uploaded the test pdf to a product using Excel pricing, downloaded the debug excel file and took a look at what size it said the document was. From that simple test, I believe "TrimBox" is the answer. In anticipation of your next question, I don't know if it can be changed. There is certainly no UI option for that. It could be that there is a registry setting, or configuration key to modify it, but you will need to ask XMPie for that information.

  • You are welcome to log a "feature request" with XMPie for that. I doubt that they will consider it a "bug" since it is working in the way that it was designed to work. Remember also that any change to the spreadsheet could cause problems for customers who are already using the feature today, so there will be resistance to change something that could impact other customers.

  • The width and height dimensions are given in mm.  Can these units be changed to inches or do we have to convert ourselves?

  • You are in Excel, which provides plenty of math functions to do the simple conversion. Perhaps in doing that you can also create a named range of the results solving the previous question?

  • The documentation says, "Actual Paper Size" is a "Composite product specific settings" but it is as you pointed out, it is an Upload product specific setting

  • The upload product is a hidden product type that can only be used as part of a composite, so I guess it is partly right. Anyhow, it is confusing and I will see if i can get it changed. At any rate if you are logging support cases with XMPie, you can also mention this documentation bug.
