Hi, i am new to Qlingo. The last time i programmed was with Macromedia
Director's Lingo (v. 6) (which is, apart of the similar name,
completly different). I am a little rusty and the way to construct
Expression is a little confusing. I am able to program some show/hide
layers in InDesign with uPlan but i want to push this a little more.

I was planning to learn JavaScript and i wonder if JS will help me
understand more Qlingo's logic. And i've read that JS can work in
Qlingo but being a newbie, i'm not sure if i understood that well.

Thanks

Hi there

Since you have some programming background, JS is good idea. Before you start learning one question will help you. Qlingo work 2 way 1st is more for design or web artwork where you need fewer databases or may be basic database like excel file or access MDB file.

And 2nd is  work with many database or many tables in one database. You can ask your self rather your work is going to be more on graphic or more on database mining (your company is art studio or a web solutions!!)

On base of this answer you can decide rather to go for JS if your company is dealing more in creative and less complex database or you can choose Ms Sql or VB or asp.Net if your company is dealing with more complex web solutions.

I believe there are few more people are there in this forum who will provide you better feedback.

regards

Pranav

QLINGO is a superset of SQL. Mostly "shortcuts" for frequent or unique
needs for variable data documents.

I do not know what version of XMPie you are using, but if you have the
desktop version of uDirect (with the wizard), but still need to use
uPlan for your overall campaign, you can use the wizard in uDirect/
InDesign to create your standard ADORs and code, then do one of two
things:

1) In the wizard, click on the "View QLingo" button. You can copy/
paste the QLingo code into the relevant ADOR object in uPlan

2) Use the Export menu item in the uDirect palette and export a .cpkg
file. Rename ".cpkg" to ".zip" and unzip the file. Within it will be a
Plan file that you can open in uPlan and use as is, or as a nice base
upon which to build upon. Be sure to use the "evaluate plan" feature
to check that you constructed the code correctly in the Wizard.

Thanks to both of you.

I am using uPlan (XP) 4.0.4 to create ADORS and uCreate (OSX) in
InDesign to use them.
So far i am connecting the dots and i am even able to adapt the code
someone gave me to other situation.

When i read the posts on this forum, i realise how little i use XMPie
products (if, then, else).
It makes me realise though, how far it can go!

The uPlan User Guide (version 4.6) contains an Appendix named "QLingo
language" with about 50 pages of explanations regarding each QLingo
function. The uDirect User guide contains a similar Appendix.
BTW, if you have the chance to own InDesign CS3 or CS4, do not
hesitate to have your XMPie softwares upgraded to version 4.6.3, as
your version 4.0.4 is now a little old.
