Network Solutions url-jacking

I just noticed that some friends of mine have had their domain name
taken over by Network Solutions. Since they are a dance school and
this is the beginning of the school year it's the worst possible time
for this to happen. My recollection is that Network Solutions has a
bad reputation in this respect but I'm not familiar with the details.
Does anyone know what their options are, and what are some good
alternatives for registering domain names?

Please note that I'm not acting as an agent for them and I don't know
how it happened; I just noticed it when I went to the web site to
check a class time. All I can do is volunteer advice.

And right now I'm so angry I don't particularly trust my own
judgement.
