Hi,
Take a look at
http://www.xmind.net/pro/features/ for a feature
comparison between the Free and the Pro versions of XMind. Note that
while Word export is listed as a feature in XMind Pro, the output
format is currently inflexible (no choosing of templates, whether to
turn on numbering, etc.) All you can do is select which properties of
the map to export.
I am an XMind Pro subscriber and I've posted similar questions to this
forum and have gotten very little response. As a long time Mind
Manager user, I regularly use the Word format to "translate" my maps
into something I can distribute (meeting minutes, class notes, etc.).
XMind Pro just isn't there yet. In my opinion XMind is on the right
track and I fully expect better support for Word and other export
formats as the user base grows but the developers have not spoken very
much about it. Like you, others have pointed out that without a
viable and flexible output option, many will declare XMind useless
despite the relative beauty and greater number of mapping options over
other mapping programs.
Until XMind catches up on the export front, I export the maps to
Freemind and then pull them into Mind Manager for formatting the
output. My experience with XMind output to MindManager format is that
it just doesn't work. It appears to export but I get an index element
error when I try to open the map in Mind Manager.
The web site indicates that the xmind files are standards based XML
files so I've started looking at the feasibility of extracting content
file and doing some sort of XSLT transformation on it to get more
useable output. But alas I'm not a programmer, just a hobbiest, and I
haven't been able to carve out the time to explore this fully.
Keep watching XMind. Support them with a subscription to start
getting into the features, but don't ditch Mind Manager yet.
Good luck,
Larry
