Hello:

I tried to run XMind on Ubuntu 8.10, but it failed. These below is the
steps I took:
* Download the portable package
* unzip to /home/dragon/tmp/xmind/xmind-portable-200811102307
directory
* change directory to XMind for Linux
* double click xmind icon
* a dialog appears, says something like (my locale is utf-8, most of
the time it displays Chinese, so I try to translate the words into
English by meaning)
"Can't display 「/home/dragon/tmp/xmind/xmind...1102307/XMind for
Linux」。Not installed this kind of application for this file type"

Please help.

Just
chmod a+x xmind
and everything works smoothly.

(for some reason xmind file does not have execution bit set)

To launch a binary file ( not a bash script )
cd /opt/xmind ...or whatever xmind is installed
then issue a ./xmind

the easiest way is to create a symlink
ln -s /opt/xmind/xmind /usr/local/bin/xmind

after that it would be in your executable path to a single xmind on
command prompt will start it .

I can't get an XMind icon to show up in Ubuntu. I can't figure out
how to start the program.

I've asked another question about this, but Here goes:

I downloaded and unzipped the XMind program.
The various folders were created, including "for linux," and "for
linux 64"

Would someone tell me how to actually install this program? I'm new
to linux, and don't really have a good grip on it yet. Thank you.

Go into "for linux" or "for linux 64", depending on which platform you
are (32 or 64-bit)

Find the file named "xmind" there, right-click it, select Properties,
select Permissions tab and mark "Allow executing file as program"
checkbox. Click Close (this is for Gnome, if you use KDE do sth
similar to mark this file as executable)

Double click file "xmind" to run the program. Consider making symlink
to it (click with middle mouse button and drag to desktop or panel)
