Hi!

I am liking the xmind a lot, but one thing that is really bugging me
off is that some nodes, when I add subtopics to these nodes, xmind
insists in modify my structure and send some nodes far away from their
original location, thus, making all my efforts in organizing the
connections, be lost in vain

how can I make xmind not moving the nodes from their original
positions?

this happens when I try to add a node with OrgDown structure type,
after I do this, the father of this node go to the left side of the
map, with that, all my connections get ugly =/

thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan

There are no good solution to solve your problem. But if you're using the mind map structure, you can try to press "Alt" key and move the main topic to fix its position.

Sincerely!

Stephen

Hi Stephen

This is actually a serious problem, about which I have already sent a pdf with explanations to the info email.   The problem is that real life often has more complex connections than the variety of map types that Xmind provides.  Using the relationship links is good, but problems arise when one wants to move a branch which has topics connected by relationships.  It is true that using alt or shift inhibits the automatic links forming, but this is inconvenient. Each topic needs a property which will permanently prevent it from linking up to other topics automatically.

The second problem is that when one has a network of topics connected by relationship links, moving them as a group is not possible. If you select several linked topics, hold down shift and move them, they jump into an overlap or lined-up arrangement, destroying the picture one has built up.  If one could select several topics and relationships, join them into a group, then move them as a block that would greatly enhance the functionality of the program.  As it is, despite all the other attractive features, I am tempted to let my subscription lapse because of this difficult behaviour.

While I am at it, let me also mention that when one pastes new sub-topics into a map which is larger than the screen, the screen position jumps away from the place where one is working. Then one has to reposition the view using the Overview tool.  Very annoying! One wants the view to stay focussed on the place where one has just pasted a new topic.

you describe 3 separate issues here .. for simplicity's sake, i will
only be addressing the second issue:

-- "If you select several linked topics, hold down shift and move
them, they jump into an overlap or lined-up arrangement, destroying
the picture one has built up." --

this issue has been raised a handful of times in the past:

http://groups.google.com/group/xmind/browse_thread/thread/f48974a535aa6588
http://groups.google.com/group/xmind/browse_thread/thread/3a72134142f97c9/44e2b070363e5d70?lnk=gst&q=xayeko#44e2b070363e5d70
http://groups.google.com/group/xmind/browse_thread/thread/85a096f3837d999c/c92e5714ef3f4c5f?lnk=gst&q=xayeko#c92e5714ef3f4c5f

the basic premise is this: when attempting to move multiple floating
topics at the same time (by dragging and dropping) they loose their
relative spatial positions (they all pile up on top of eachother)

this was not an issue in older versions of XMind .. it appears to have
started somewhere between the 3.0.2 and 3.1.0 releases. I'm not a
Java programmer, but i dug around the code a bit and found the portion
that is responsible for this behavior .. unfortunately, it's not as
simple as changing it back to the way it was before. The change in
code appears to be a workaround for a bug introduced in 3.1.0 where
you would lose positional information of a 'Main Topic' node when you
detached it from the 'Central Topic' (by moving it a sufficient
distance away or by holding down the shift key while moving it)

i don't know enough about the structure of the XMind program to
suggest a specific solution, but i will add some (more specific) notes
to the bug report pertaining to this issue:

(issue 157): http://code.google.com/p/xmind3/issues/detail?id=157

i apologize for the extra message spam .. but i just realized that
alan's message was attached to a longer thread .. for clarification's
sake, i am specifically responding to the second issue described in
alan's message.
