how far do the FM transmitters transmit?

I am sure you are asking about the millawatt FM. These are good for about 20
to 30 feet with a clear line of sight, much less through walls or beyond a
car interior.

Low power FM which requires a license is good for up to 10 miles or so in
the broadcast band.

Not really
Digital ones that can be set to an exact channel are better than analog
tunable ones. Digital ones are easier to use in many cases and they cost
more, especially if they can be set to more than eight channels.

The battery life of some like the Belkin isn't too great.
