A few points:

If the group takes off and the current moderators are all in agreement
and on-board with my approach, the current mods all become owners.
That way the group can't be taken down by any one person.

I'm open to suggestion as to who else might be a good moderator.

I've set the group up so that new members must be approved, unless they
are invited by an existing member.

The signup page for the group asks potential members what bike they
have and to briefly describe their experience with motorcycles.

I figure this is better than having to ban spammers after they join and
post their crap.

Please let me know if there is anything else you think might make this
group successful.

Thanks, Dean

Hey Folks,

Those with web sites may want to add them to this Bomis XJ Webring:

I am waiting for you and the other moderators I've invited (Rick
Massey, Bill Hanna) to check out the group and let me know if you
think this will work.

Then, I'll present the idea to the Yahoo XJ list (with approval and
backing by you, Rick and Bill) and we'll invite everyone over, first
sending personal invites to all of the regulars (so they don't have to
be approved first) and them posting periodic reminders on the Yahoo
list that we are moving over here, with instructions.

Hopefully, we'll end up with the majority of the regular posters over
here in the first week or so, with the rest of the semi-active members
straggling in over time.

Let me know what you think.

BINGO -- We have a BINGO! I'm diving in this new pool without my
swimmies. It should be nice to come home and just be with "The Family"
for a change ... although, I'm gunna miss all them whacky arguements
with the Graphic Artists, the Hot Biker Chic's needin' tuh meet-up with
me, and those zany porn peddlar's who'd sneak-in and put us on some
spammer's list, just for fun. Thank God I can get my nose back in to
the Factory Repair Manual's, again -- and quit trying to read the
Koran. A toast! -- -- "Here's to the best damn bunch of YAMAHA

used to the new Clubhouse -- but, so long as everybody's together,
again -- with us being able to keep-out the riff-raff ... I'm sure
we'll be comfortable. It's the family that makes the house; a home!

Ok, sounds like we are all in agreement. I'll compose an email to the
group in the next few days detailing why we want to move and how we're
gonna do it. I'll run it by you guys before I send it.

I was thinking of perhaps adding one other moderator, perhaps someone
in a different part of the world.

How about Ken Wagnitz?

If Wag's has the time and will do it ... I'd say he'd be a top pick,
for sure. He got that special ... down-to-earth way ... about him that
I really like -- plus, he's also a no nonsence guy -- who'd watch the
door -- and, spot a problem a mile away!

Oh ... I almost forgot! I think having Brand Newbee's come up with a
VIN for their project or runner is a very good idea. No VIN -- NO In!
And, if you spot a fudged-up VIN -- you'd know that the person knockin'
at the door -- is a "Salesman" -- and NOT a motorcyclist!

Sounds like a good candidate.

BTW - Are we requesting top or bottom posting on this list ?

Some folks might be nervous about providing a VIN. Enterprising spammers
might go lift one from an eBay listing or the Micapeak registry and borrow a
VIN.

It will slow down the quick hit garbage dumpers though.

I'm open to discussion. There are arguments for both. I've gotten in
the habit of bottom posting because I think it flows better, but
bottom posting is definitely more work. I notice, Mike, that you hang
steadfastly on to top posting. :-p

One thing that's REALLY nice about Google is that you dont have 10K of
CRAP tacked on to the bottom of every message. This should make the
digests cleaner and those that aren't consistent with trimming up
their replies won't be so much of an issue.

Does any of you have any compelling arguments for either top or bottom posting?

I guess I could be easily swayed either way or to not state a preference at all.

Re: VIN posting - how about we just ask for the first three digits?
That is enough to specifically identify the model and year without
disclosing too much information.

The archives are public, though, so we want to try not to post a VIN
to model cross reference if possible.

What do you guys think?

I only top-post on XJ Owners because it is a list rule. Either is fine.

Really? I always understood that bottom posting was the list rule per
The Mountin Man.

Anyways, I hadn't planned on making an issue of it.

If we're voting, I vote for top post. It's the default cursor
placement, and it's also what 99% of us do at work, if I'm not
mistaken. I post both, probably about 50/50. I'll conform to the
consensus, but there's my personal vote.

I'm also hesitant about entering/posting VINs for the same reasons you
mention. As far as a requirement, we're not going to be cross
refrencing them with anything, so someone could technically put '123'
in there and get in. We'd knock the spammer off real quick after their
first post, on the other hand.
The question I have is: is that information visible after you enter
it? Would we be able to (or feel like) going back to cross reference
to find out if they have an 81 650 vs. an 82 750 to answer the
question posted? I think that I can say "typically, the request for
information is accompanied by a year/model identification". We all
know that's not always the case.

Just rambling. Spent all day watching a par 3 hole for a charity golf
tournament today, and it was something like 90^2 from about 1 p.m. on.
Of course two 'careless golfers' left their coolers open, and two
beers fell out (at precisely the time I was getting thirsty - what a
coincidence. Nice guys) that I consumed. Followed up by lots of water,
of course.
And I rode the bike, as always!

I'm hitting the showers. Visit soon.
