Hello!

I've given some thoughts to solving the lack of inter-hackerspaces communication, especially in adjacent timezones. Although there's a lot of potential inter-hackerspace collaboration, we are all so locally focused (not a bad thing) that we have trouble keeping these communication lines open.

The general mailing list dis...@lists.hackerspaces.org isn't bad but represents maybe only 1% of the activity of all hackerspaces.

What has worked really well with our sister hackerspace is having Steve Dalton (founder of Goldcoast Techspace) on our mailing list and me on his mailing list. It makes introductions and referrals a lot easier. We also get to forward whatever interesting happening is from on both list. But obviously, I can't really scale to more than one mailing list.

So I'd like to suggest that all interested members become XCJ ambassador to ONE of their favorite local or foreign hackerspace and do the same. We can have regular reports on overall activities and collaboration at our Wednesday meeting (for which we'll probably need a Minister of Foreign Affairs).

This can be the starting point:

This is a great opportunity to make friends abroad and establish contacts!

Who's volunteering? ;)

Name -> Hackerspace

Thanks!

Hi Ricky,

that's probably a good idea. I am going to seek contact to one German
hackerspace near my hometown (it failed in the past) again and will
try to establish a bi-directional flow of information. Not sure about
their interest since they are not very responsive but I keep trying.

cool idea!

Ricky - you mentioned that we are currently focused locally, are there
already representatives for local groups/hackerspaces?

For example, does DFRobot have a contact person that XCJ members can
contact? Or, is there some other hackerspace type of group in Shanghai
that has similar interests - what is the contact/rep from that space??

Also, I will reach out to some of my friends in other worldwide
hackerspaces and see if they would like a rep here !!!

thanks,

Abe

I'll be moving to UK soon, so I can help coordinate with London Hackspace (or whichever hackerspace I end up close to). And of course, when we have a hackerspace on Mars in a few years I'll help coordinate with that too ;)

We'll also need some Chinese members to monitor other Chinese hackerspace's mailing list.

Just discussed with Ricky, we could also have bots that subscribes to different mailing lists, monitor and categorizing the threads based on keywords like: robotics, swarm robots, mesh network, arduino, etc... Could have a page with world map and tag cloud, when people click on a subject, it shows the hackerspaces that discuss about the subject.

I still want to do a VoIP network interlinking hackerspaces. The price point on iax2 devices (great for nat and poor bandwidth regions) are still a little expensive. Soft phones are free and iaxagent on android is great! It could be called p.e.n.i.s for short:
phone every normal internet space

The name needs some work.

just checked the links of china based hackerspaces. looks the Flamingo EDA OpenSpace once focused on arduino but their homepage didn't get update in more than 1 year. i'm subscribing the list of ChaiHuo in shenzhen 柴火.

the map idea sounds good. need have some code to process the mails to get topics, location info, and the link of the discussion thread then overlay those info with google map api. ..  or simply create a twitter map of the hackerspaces?

cheers,

Hey there !
I've been lurking on this mailing list for quite a while ; I'm one of
the core members of the Electrolab (french hackerspace near Paris, see
www.electrolab.fr). I'm trying to follow what's going on in other
hackerspaces (all of the french speaking community, but also some
international ones, like yours :).

I have to admit it is far from being easy to be on several mailing
lists... and as you can see, I haven't been active on the XCJ mailing
list so far.

Unfortunately, most of our online ressources are in french (which
makes sense, because most of our members & contacts do speak french).
Whenever it makes sense to document a project in english, we do so
(for example, when developping a reusable element. Our point is that
it doesn't make much sense to document each and every tiny project,
the web is already full of arduino project descriptions...).
We are nontheless more than willing to collaborate on various bigger
scale projects - we have some stuff in the works...
We also do participate to big events (we were at the EHSM in Berlin
last december, at the CCC 1.5 years ago, we will be at OHM2013, ...).
To be honest, as you might see on our website (using automatic
translation & checking the pics ;) we've been focusing alot on
building our lab (and its equipment). It has been - and still is - our
main project.
For "proofs", check for example this:
http://www.electrolab.fr/2011/09/27/chemical-brothers/ (this is
already a quite old post ; our lab has progressed a lot since then)
and then compare with this:
http://www.electrolab.fr/2010/12/13/nuclear-launch-detected/

Last but not least, please be aware that everyone is welcome here : if
by any chance you come to Paris, drop me a line to visit and chat :)

Anyway, I'd be happy to discuss further any of this with you !

Cheers,
Clement, for the Electrolab core team (our specific mailing list is in
CC: anyone can send a message to the core of our organisation).

Clément, Electrolab,

Très intéressant Clément, vous avez mis énormément de travail dans votre espace! C'est très inspirant et ça suit de près la philosophie "the space is the project".

What I find interesting is this sentence:

"L'électrolab a fait le choix d'être l'un des rares hackerspaces français à disposer d'un cadre légal, d'un local pérenne et d'équipements de qualité. "

"Electrolab has a made the choice to be one of the rare french hackerspaces to have a legal status, a long-term space and quality equipment"

It seems you raise the bar pretty high! What's the status of the rest of the French-speaking hackerspaces?

Hi there !
First, a quick precision: the co...@electrolab.fr list is only for the
elected, very active core team members (we're 9 persons..?). Our main
mailing list is elect...@electrolab.fr ; there are several hundreds
of users on this mailing list, obviously not only members (we have
less than one hundred active, paying members at the moment), but also
enthusiasts wo participate to various discussion threads on this list.

It is true that this very strong choice has a lot of consequences:
most of our energy is dedicated to building a stable and quality
space. The last 24 months have been quite a ride for all of us, and
even if there is still a lot to do, we're already very happy with what
has been done so far.

I cannot speak for all of the hackerspaces in France, but from what we
see - and what the situation was when the Electrolab started, most of
our friends have a slightly different approach: they are squat based,
and therefore:
- can have huge spaces (we've seen several 100s of square meters),
very well located (right in the center of Paris, for example, where
usually it is way too expensive to actually rent a space). For
information, we're like 30mn away by train/car from Paris downtown.
- cannot build for the long term, because any squat might get expelled
anytime by the police.
Therefore, they tend to focus on different projects: you can "easily"
organize software hacking sessions, conferences, etc in such a
project. Obviously, you dont want to spend any time improving the
space itself too much, and whenever you must be ready to pack your
stuff in a hurry to flee the cops, you cannot afford more than few
servers, routers, small equipment. The electrolab has gathered, bought
& fixed a lot of fragile, expensive and heavy machinery, which would
have been totally impossible without a strong, reliable organization.

Another issue of importance: if you tinker with a keyboard, or even a
small benchtop drill, nobody can really be hurt, and you cannot
destroy stuff of value. When you want to have stuff like a heavy duty
lathe, mill, saws, specific chemicals, etc... then the people in
charge want to (or rather, MUST) ensure:
- that nobody gets hurt, and that in case something bad happens, an
insurance exists and is valid
- that no machinery (usually expensive, fragile & dangerous stuff)
gets stupidly destroyed by lack of training. So you have to have some
sort of organization that manages this kind of stuff. We for example
have put in place an RFID system to enable members the use of heavy
machines, related to their attendance to a training.

To get back on the status of other hackerspaces in France, there are
several other structures that do very well, have a lot of members,
really cool projects, but I so far haven't seen a similar structure as
the electrolab - where we really focus on bringing the best tools &
ressources to our members -and ourselves :)
That is not saying that we raise the bar very high or are better than
others: in my opinion, it is as important to do what we do, as being
in a squat in the center of Paris, organizing workshops, conferences,
and all of this.

We have a quite strong tradition to collaborate with other structures
that do things differently, because we believe it is important to be a
part of a larger community, with everyone contribution something
specific. Some example of this: we frequently get our hands on
equipment (for example, a school/company trashing its old stuff...),
and resell/give away some of it to friend structure whenever we can ;
these structures, on the other hand, might help us find more
equipment, or maybe lend us some space in the downtown for a saturday
afternoon for a specific workshop.

I wont waste your time further, but as you might already see, the
Electrolab is really willing to contribute to the community, and this
initiative of inter hackerspace collaboration really makes sense to
us. I'm available if you want to discuss this further. :)
C.

ps: another very important sentence for us - it is legally our reason
of existence:
"L'association Electrolab est une association loi 1901 ayant pour
objet la transmission non marchande de savoir-faire et connaissances
scientifiques ou techniques, l’engagement d’actions visant à
promouvoir les sciences et techniques auprès du grand public, et la
mise à disposition de ses adhérents d’un espace de travail et de
ressources communes destinées à la réalisation de projets coopératifs
ayant une composante culturelle, humanitaire, scientifique, artistique
ou technique."

In summary: "it is our goal to share, in a non commercial fashion,
know-how and techniques, to engage in scientific mediation/diffusion
to the larger public, and to enable our member to do collaborative and
open projects by the means of having a set of equipment & ressources
put in common".
Well, my translation sucks, but you get the idea ;)

Hi Ricky

Fantastic idea,  a few people here in Oz are on a lot of the other Australian lists and execs have started a regular Google hangout,  but I don't know many that have interacted with overseas spaces like I have.

There is a lot to be learned looking at other spaces,  I certainly learnt a lot during the mhv visit tonight in Canberra and I do like the xcj list when I can.

Are you guys connected with Hong Kong hackerspace?  My friend Stuart (south African living in hk for a long time) is a member there and seem like a good bunch of people. I think Singapore is also pretty good.
