Anyone have any knowledge of China's household wiring standards - things like
  - how close network/cable TV cable allowed to be to mains wiring
  - how close power points allowed to taps
  - Mandatory use of separate light and power circuits, or is use of light circuit for power allowed?

Getting ready for a major renovation and want to be fairly sure I am not sprooking what is supposed to happen in Australia, instead of what is supposed to happen here :)

Don't think so. But I'm my home we have all those points side by side. Especially the water one. Luckily that pipe doesn't condense

yeah that is exactly the sort of thing we want to move away from ...and all the hand twisted wires to air conditioners and lights ... you know bare wires just twisted together and wrapped up with high quality tape and no terminal box or cable clamp..... just dangling....

Still we have at least one set of bare twisted wires on air-con that is outside and still has most of the tape attached ... and the air-con is still  working after ~10+ years!

Another aspect of this is cabling: Is it supposed to be inspected and approved by "anyone".

Ditto re building works - any inspection required - gas, water, electricity, building code....or am I still a total lao wei?

well good news is that a lot of the buildings are being retrofitted with correct grounding (and live/neutral wiring) and even the gas and water pipes are also being grounded.

as far as i understand, everything inside the home is your responsibility for a non commercial space, for a commercial space you do get inspected. but it doesn't stop you from following a standard.

The pertinent standard is legal liability, including potentially both
civil and criminal penalties, in cases of negligence. The Shanghai
public library contains a variety of best practice guides, but
official standard building code publications may be like Shanghai
traffic law: there are conflicting authoritative texts.

I can tell you that the Beijing has required AutoCad's REVIT software
code for conformance to certain best practices, which is going into
effect in 2016 or 2017 as a law, if I remember correctly. RevIt
includes a variety of best practice rules which it will apply to CAD
drawings.

However, such software is no substitute for becoming familiar with
actual best practices. The risk of catastrophic fire or gas explosion
is to great to depend on software alone.

I hope you are all doing well! I miss Shanghai but not enough to
consider leaving Denver for a while.

.... "conflicting authoritative texts" this was one main reason I asked here - trying to get some first hand info rather than what is supposed to happen.

Did just get some photos of a friends renovation and can see from those that:-
  • power and internet/phone/cableTV are physically well separated in two different conduit runs and even cross at right angles and approach power points from opposite sides
  • power and water are in different conduits, but sometimes run together ... with the electricity below the water
  • probably no separate power/lighting circuits, unless by convenience due to physical cables layout
  • photos are poor quality and I suspect incomplete, so the missing ones may show a different story as the photos were provided by the contractor
Thanks everyone for your comments.
