Generally speaking, slide guitarists use very heavy strings and set a high action on their guitars. This allows them to apply pressure to their strings and move their slide up and down without it rattling against the frets.
This means that when you play all of the open strings together, your guitar sounds an E chord. This tuning was first used by early Delta bluesmen, and is still one of the most popular tunings amongst slide guitarists.
Keep experimenting with both your action and the gauge of your strings. Adjust your set up until you find the sweet spot where you can play slide, without making it too challenging to play your guitar when you take the slide off.
Brain activity was compared between groups during passive reading of action- and object-related words. These stimuli, interspersed with filler words and hash-mark strings, were projected onto a screen and presented for 150 ms in a randomized order, with a 2.5-s stimulus onset asynchrony, and participants were requested to keep as still as possible, attend to the stimuli, and read them silently. This task was split into three parts of approximately 7 min each (21 min overall), allowing participants breaks in between if needed. Following the scan and without prior warning, they performed a word recognition test (involving rating a list to indicate their recognition of novel words and some of those previously seen in the experiment) that confirmed that they had been attentive during scanning. The data confirmed that they had been attentive: both groups performed above chance [average hit rate: controls = 76.2% (SD = 18.1%), ASC = 76.2% (SD: 19.1%)], with no significant difference appearing between them in the number of correct answers [t(34) = -0.018, p > 0.9].
Players of Virtua Fighter and advanced players of Tekken 3 use a small set of very specific moves. In Virtua Fighter, all the moves require very few button pushes or joystick nudges. This has the tempo of a real fight, in which the player must second-guess the opponent's next move and dodge or intercept very specific, unpredictable attacks. With Bungie's interpolation technology, performing single moves one after another will look as smooth as predetermined combos. With scripted strings, Bungie limits the players to using something the designers had to think of first.
Why limit the vocabulary of fighting strategies with strings? If the strings are unblockable, then opponents have no room to respond, and the game becomes boring. If one can block the strings, experienced players will quickly stop using strings in favor of singular, unpredictable moves. Take a page from RISC technology: simpler moves and shorter moves make better combos.
