Hi. Okay, our electronic resources librarian left recently and I am
helping out. We're having some problems with Gale that I can't figure
out. I've read on this listserv some other issues but am not familiar
enough to figure out what to do. So here's a summary. What I want to
know is where we're going wrong and how to right it........if i'm
barking up the wrong tree please let me know.......thanks in advance
for any help you can provide me.

We have several Gale Databases and have also broken out some sub-sets.
Each seems to come with its own problem-all seemingly related to
finding full text. Some have link to HTML but then an Infotrak login
screen rather than the full-text, some say check for availability but
when you click on Umlaut you get nothing, even though the native
database has full text, and some just don't execute the search.

Here is a synopsis:

Eighteenth century collections online
Searched via Xerxes interface for Jane Austin, Austin, grass – no hits
In native interface got hits.
Relevant ML IRD info:
DB code: ECCO
link to native interface: $8564_u (???)

Biography resource center
Searched for cat stevens
Got full –text html links but when clicked on link, got infotrak login
page
IRD info:
Authentication: new64731
Link to records in native interface:http://galenet.galegroup.com/
servlet/BioRC?docNum=$001&locID=new64731

Literature Resource Center
Not federating properly--can't get to FT:
IRD info:
Authentication: new64731
No link to records in native interface info

Gale Virtual Reference Library
A funny thing happens with the results: you get 2 full text available
links for each entry. The first link works b/c it's a PDF (not sure
why it doesn't say PDF, but...) The second link just takes you to a
blank page. If you look at the IRD for GVRL, you'll see that there
isn't anything in the native URL field (wonder if this is why the
second link doesn't work??)
IRD info:
Authentication: new64731
No link to records in native interface

Health and wellness resource center
same as problem with Literature resource center-not federating
properly, no full-text showing up when there is FT in native db
Authentication: nysl_me_nyuniv
No link to records in native interface

So you can probably tell I don't really know what I'm looking for and
am new to all this, so I guess my questions are
-How do I find out if I need a link to records in native interface URL
(and why are they so vastly different in several of the above
examples?)
And how do I fix the issues? Any suggestions welcome. THanks

Hi Nada, just two quick questions:

1. Could you clarify what you mean by not "federating" correctly. Do you mean, it's not searching correctly? How so?

2. For the first example -- where you get no hits in Xerxes -- do you also get no hits in the standard Metalib interface?

> Eighteenth century collections online, no hits

As I mentioned in the other email, this appears to be a Metalib issue, so report it to Ex Libris.

> Biography resource center, links to login page

I suspect this is actually a problem on the Gale side. Assuming you are on-campus when you see this, I think it suggests that Gale doesn't have your full campus IP range. Does it work if you are off-campus and go through your proxy server?

> Literature Resource Center
> Health and wellness resource center
> no full-text links

Looks like, in both of these cases, you don't have an entry in the Link to Record in Native Interface field in Metalib.

Our Gale IRDs don't either, but that may just be because one doesn't exist, or we haven't done enough to keep them up. Anyway, you might ask on the METALIB-DISCUSS-L listserv if people having working syntaxes to the native records for these databases. That may be enough to get things working.

> Gale Virtual Reference Library, two links one not saying PDF

This is actually a problem in Xerxes we addressed recently. If you upgrade to the latest version of Xerxes, this should get fixed.

So, as you can see, a problem can lie in a number of different places (vendor, Metalib, your local Metalib KB, Xerxes), so you have to kind of know the boundaries of the various systems to know where to start looking. It's not clear at the beginning. You can only really grasp this over time.

Never a bad idea to start with Ex Libris. Certainly, this listserv and the METALIB-DISCUSS-L listserv can also be places to ask questions.
