Recommended way to compress directories with snappy-java?

Considering that snappy-java only works on Input/Output streams, what is the officially recommended way of compressing/decompressing directories recursively (with all the subdirectories and their files)? 

Should the external solutions like archiving with TAR (e. g. via Commons-Compress) in order to get one big InputStream be used, or there are simpler ways?
