spatialite extension loading on new macos

I have a java app that does a load_extension on mod_spatialite that worked up until a few months ago on my Mac (now running Catalina). With the latest version of MacOS the native version of sqlite does not allow extension loading (core dumps when it hits the load_extension call). And i can't seem to figure out any way to get the jdbc driver to utilize the homebrew installed version instead. Any suggestions very much appreciated!
