Whenit comes to rugged battery chargers and engine starters, Schumacher Electric has what users need, when they need it. The SC1445 packs a punch with a 250-amp, 12-volt engine starter and a boost mode of up to 50 amps and 12 volts to bring severely discharged batteries back to life. For general charging purposes, 10 amps with 12 volts of power will get the battery running again in no time. The SC1445 is manually operated with a 135-minute timer for precision control over the charging process, and the easy-to-read meter displays accurate charging levels so users know when the job is done.

Will has written for several major auto sites including Motor1 since 2020, logging hundreds of hours researching and testing products ranging from child car seats to torque wrenches. Will is also Certified by Safe Kids Worldwide as a Child Passenger Safety Technician (#T836339).

Our product testing team then ordered the car battery chargers that best met these standards. A team member tested each product on a 2004 Subaru Forester, taking note of how quickly the car battery charger could charge a car battery, versatility, ease of use, and value. Each car battery charger was given a rating out of 5.0 stars based on these criteria.

The Schumacher SC1280 is a quick battery charger putting out 13.0 V at a 15.0-A current. It can fully charge a 105.0-ampere hour battery in 16 hours (this is relatively fast). It can also automatically detect the battery voltage and adjust between 6.0- and 12.0-V modes. While most cars use a 12.0-V battery, 6.0-V batteries are common in motorcycles.

This charger includes a two-year warranty, trickle charging, and desulfation mode. It also has an automatic shutoff feature to help prevent overcharging. However, several reports say this automatic charging feature can malfunction.

We think this is the best overall battery charger because of its low-cost and reliability. It is not the fastest-charging or most versatile charger that we recommend, but for the cost, probably the best option for most car owners.

The first thing that stood out to us about the Genius PRO50 was the quality of the alligator cables. While many of our other recommendations (including other NOCO products) have well-made alligator clips, the Genius PRO50 has thick, braided cord sleeves that provide extra protection and longevity.

Unlike the other battery chargers on this list, the Schumacher SC1309 is capable not only of charging a vehicle but also provides a good jump start. The built-in tester can detect battery charge levels and even has some diagnostics features.

The voltage output is consistent at 15.0 amps, which is a little high for a 12-volt battery but not high enough to endanger battery health. This voltage also means a fast charge rate and minimal charging time.

If you find yourself charging a variety of battery types in all weather conditions, consider the TOPDON Tornado 30000. This 30.0-amp battery charger has modes for just about every type of battery, including lead-acid, WET, GEL, AGM, and lithium. It also has modes for 6.0-, 12.0-, and 24.0-V batteries.

What immediately stands out about the TOPDON is that it has 12 different charging modes. This can seem overwhelming if you only need to jump a typical car battery. Some of the charging modes are for batteries unlikely to be used in a vehicle. However, included with the TOPDON is an instruction booklet that provides a handy table describing the use case for each charging mode.

There are only a few buttons, one to select the charge mode, and another to initiate charging. We had little difficulty attaching the TOPDON to the battery terminals of our test vehicle. During our test, we were impressed with the high quality of the alligator clamps. They are a bit larger and sturdier than the clamps typically included with this size battery charger. The power supply cord, however, is short for a device that must be plugged in to operate. Many users may need an extension cord to get this charger to their vehicle.

The most commonly praised feature of the Tornado is its smart charging functions. Reviewers like that it can be set up and allowed to run on its own with no need to worry about overcharging. At full power, the Tornado can quickly charge a battery. Despite the high price point, many feel this battery charger offers high value.

The CTEK US 7002 is a beefed-up version of the CTEK MXS 5.0. It boasts many of the same features such as automatic switch charging. It can put out a bit more amperage (7.0 A) and so will charge more quickly. This model is also built to withstand extreme temperatures and can operate between -4.0 and 122.0 Fahrenheit.

Choose the 7002 if you need to restore an old or depleted battery. This is also a battery charger that works with a wide range of vehicles, including boat and ATV batteries. We think it is among the easiest-to-use car battery chargers because of its automatic detection features, single-button interface, and easy-to-understand display.

The CTEK 7002 is one of the easiest-to-use battery chargers we tested. Simply plug it in, attach the clips, and press the power button. The display will even give an indication of how much charge your battery has. When attached to our multimeter, we noted that this machine delivers a consistent 14.4 V in normal mode.

Some say the unit can heat up quite a bit when charging for long periods of time. It is also more expensive than other options, though most feel the increased cost is worth the improved quality that comes with it.

The NOCO Genius 10 is a battery charger, maintainer, and desulfator. It can work on 6.0- or 12.0-V batteries and includes thermal sensors to help prevent overcharging. The Genius 10 can charge nearly every type of car battery, including lithium-ion batteries.

Utilizing next-generation microprocessor technology, the Genius 10 can fully charge a 100.0-Ah battery in about 14 hours. What makes the Genius 10 stand out is that it offers all of these features in such a small, lightweight package.

The 10-amp NOCO is easy to set up, and while the alligator clamps are small, they open wide and are a breeze to attach. The NOCO display shows battery charge, and the one-button interface allows you to switch between modes. We love how lightweight this device is, hence why we named it the Best Portable Car Battery Charger of 2024.

Reviewers say this battery works well with deep-cycle batteries, and users appreciate its ability to revive completely dead batteries using the overcharge mode. Several customers also praise the high quality of the included alligator clips.

The CTEK MXS 5.0 can charge batteries up to 110.0 A and takes about 35 hours to charge a 110.0-Ah battery. Because of its automatic voltage detector, you can use this product to charge not just car batteries but any battery under 110.0 A. These features make it ideal for use as a trickle charger.

Reviewers are impressed by the charging speed of the CTEK, especially since most purchase this charger as a battery tender for trickle charging. Customers appreciate the tending safety features, and several people point out that they prefer this battery charger for their AGM batteries.

This low-cost entry in the NOCO Genius series offers an alternative to the Genius 10. It has many of the same features, including the ability to charge lithium-ion batteries. The Genius 1 does lack some of the battery repair features of the Genius 10.

When tested with our multimeter, the Genius 1 showed a reading of 15.0 V, which was more than the Genius 10 supplied. The lower amperage of the Genius 1 means it must supply a slightly higher voltage to increase the charging speed. Fifteen amps are within the tolerable limits for a 12.0-V battery.

Praise and complaints for the Genius 1 are similar to the Genius 10. Many users say the review manual is difficult to decipher. However, using the Genius 1 is mostly self-explanatory, especially for the most common tasks of charging and maintaining a standard 12.0-V car battery.

The Cobra 2A Battery Charger is a tiny but mighty charger for passenger cars, ATVs, jet skis, snowmobiles, power boats, and motorcycles. This charger is equipped with an LED indicator light to determine the current battery status. A blinking orange light indicates charging is in process which will change to a solid green light when charging is finished.
