xdotool get_desktop

Here's what I get when I run xdotool get_desktop:

MacBook-Air-van-Brian:xdotool-2.20110530.1 briansemmes$ xdotool get_desktop

Your windowmanager claims not to support _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP, so the query for the current desktop was aborted.

I believe I am running xquartz as the window manager, I am on OS X yosemite

It would be great to control of the mouse and keyboard from the command line (!!) Any ideas?
