Hello!

I have been on the sidelines for quite some time now, interested in XDI. I am starting to look into the status again. We are considering some use cases where XDI could be interesting for us. It seems that there have been many changes over the past few years, and that I have some catching up to do.

One big change that is not clear to me is: previously OpenID's could be based on iNames. What is the relationship (if any) between OpenID connect or Auth2 and XDI?

By the way, I tried resolving my Cloud Name on xdi2.org, but it does not resolve. Any idea why?

I will surely have more questions later. :-)

(Is this even the right forum to ask these types of questions?)

Regards,
=David

Yes lots of things have changed and are still changing..

For some state-of-the-art XDI functionality, have a look at these demos:
http://xdi2.org/demos.html

And the XDI web tools:
http://server.xdi2.org/

The is no direct relationship at this point, but various use cases could be imagined where XDI is used with OpenID Connect and/or OAuth2. E.g. you could use an OAuth2 access token to authorize access to an XDI endpoint.

By the way, I tried resolving my Cloud Name on xdi2.org, but it does not resolve. Any idea why?

Unfortunately the old cloud name registry has collapsed, and all the names are now in some kind of limbo.
I can't really tell if and when they will be available again.

Hi Markus,

Thank you for the reply and informative answers. It is nice to hear from you, too.

I do hope that XDI will be able to gain traction. I think it’s a really cool idea. I personally really like how the graph can be represented by a URI. So cool!

As an extremely basic, simple integration to our system, at this point I am only thinking about how to validate usernames when setting up new users in the system. The idea would be, for new users, to choose their valid CloudName, get it registered (however that works), and perhaps set up some relationships to other entities. In our system, each user has one or more Personas. I thought that it could be very easy to represent these Personas with CloudNames.

Those are just my thoughts right now. If you have any good ideas to add or pointers on getting started, I would be grateful.

Cheers,
=David

Hey,

Sounds interesting! What you describe (registration, uniqueness, personas, etc) is quite central to what we're already doing with XDI..

Are you planning to join the weekly calls?
https://github.com/projectdanube/xdi2/wiki/XDI2-Weekly-Call

If so, we could certainly discuss your use case in more detail if you like!

David, I just wanted to +1 Markus' reply, i.e., that modeling registration, uniqueness, personas, etc. in a distributed global graph model is exactly what XDI is designed for. If you're able to join the XDI2 calls we'd be glad to discuss.

Best,

Hi Drummond,

Thank you, guys, for the nice offer. I would like to join the calls.

I was thinking about this issue a little. I am concerned that the OSGi UserAdmin model and the XDI model may be too different to “merge” them. That does not preclude their working side-by-side, but in an OSGi system, although possible, I don’t think this would be ideal.

I will continue to give this some thought.

Best regards,
=David

David,

I know very little about OSGi, but I would agree that you don't want to try to merge the models. XDI is a semantic graph model and data interchange protocol (that extends the RDF semantic graph model) so it solves a different set of interoperability problems than OSGi. But they seem complementary.

Best,

Hi Drummond,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Ok, I will try to give this more thought, and maybe prepare a small presentation about the OSGi UserAdmin service in order to inspire ideas about such interoperability.

Best regards,
=David

Hi,

Sorry I dropped off the map (again). Unfortunately, my priorities have changed (again). :-(

I’ll try to catch up with you fine people later.

In the meantime, best of luck!

Cheers,
=David
