Point your smart phone web browser to m.xcskies.com and see what you
get. This app has been fully tested in iPhone, and some other smart
phone emulators. However, it will most definitely have *plenty of bugs*
that everyone gets to help out and smash. If you are good at debugging
or can articulate exact issues with XC Skies Mobile on your phone's web
browser, then please post away!
Here's what would be nice to have tested:
1. Droid/Android-based phones. These phones use a webkit based browser,
which is what Safari (iPhone) is based on as well. Emulator tests only
go so far but results have been good.
2. Google's Nexus One. This app has not been tested at all in this
phone. Anyone have one?
3. Newer BlackBerry devices that have fully functional web browsers.
Older versions are known to not work due to their inability to handle
Javascript AJAX calls. Your mileage may vary with BB.
Additionally, knowing exact resolution issues (e.g., map not filling
entire browser area, or over-filled) would be nice to hear about.
For now, there are no directions or tutorials created for using this
app. You're on your own... There are only a few features available so
this should not be an issue for beta testing. It also behaves similar to
the full version of XC Skies Maps...
XC Skies Mobile uses the Web Map Lite API by CloudMade. It's a
full-featured API like Yahoo!'s and Google's that should give more than
enough value to a mobile application. This mobile departure will be
trial and error but we have a good start.
Why not a specific iPhone App? Spending effort to create a specific
iPhone App sounds like a fun project, but a web-based application
(running in a browser) is still the lowest common denominator when it
comes to providing the most features to the largest audience. With newer
smart phones scrambling to implement fully compliant "Web 2.0" browsers,
this seems to be the best vehicle to provide XC Skies on a mobile platform.
Text-based versions of point forecasts are coming next for low bandwidth
situations.
