Joseph Corn is the author of the aviation classic The Winged Gospel and two other history books. He lectures on history at Stanford University and earned his PhD at Berkeley. Corn specialises in the social and cultural history of technology reception. In 2011 he edited Into the Blue: American Writing on Aviation and Spaceflight

The history of aviation extends for more than two thousand years, from the earliest forms of aviation such as kites and attempts at tower jumping to supersonic and hypersonic flight by powered, heavier-than-air jets.

Otto Lilienthal became known as the "Glider King" or "Flying Man" of Germany. He duplicated Wenham's work and greatly expanded on it in 1884, publishing his research in 1889 as Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation (Der Vogelflug als Grundlage der Fliegekunst), which is seen as one of the most important works in aviation history.[62] He also produced a series of hang gliders, including bat-wing, monoplane and biplane forms, such as the Derwitzer Glider and Normal soaring apparatus, which is considered to be the first air plane in series production, making the Maschinenfabrik Otto Lilienthal the first air plane production company in the world.[63]

The Wrights appear to be the first to make serious studied attempts to simultaneously solve the power and control problems. Both problems proved difficult, but they never lost interest. They solved the control problem by inventing wing warping for roll control, combined with simultaneous yaw control with a steerable rear rudder. Almost as an afterthought, they designed and built a low-powered internal combustion engine. They also designed and carved wooden propellers that were more efficient than any before, enabling them to gain adequate performance from their low engine power. Although wing-warping as a means of lateral control was used only briefly during the early history of aviation, the principle of combining lateral control in combination with a rudder was a key advance in aircraft control. While many aviation pioneers appeared to leave safety largely to chance, the Wrights' design was greatly influenced by the need to teach themselves to fly without unreasonable risk to life and limb, by surviving crashes. This emphasis, as well as low engine power, was the reason for low flying speed and for taking off in a headwind. Performance, rather than safety, was the reason for the rear-heavy design because the canard could not be highly loaded; anhedral wings were less affected by crosswinds and were consistent with the low yaw stability.

The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission was established in 1999 to encourage the broadest national and international participation in the celebration of 100 years of powered flight.[115] It publicized and encouraged a number of programs, projects and events intended to educate people about the history of aviation.

At the beginning of the 21st century, digital technology allowed subsonic military aviation to begin eliminating the pilot in favor of remotely operated or completely autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In April 2001 the unmanned aircraft Global Hawk flew from Edwards AFB in the US to Australia non-stop and unrefuelled. This is the longest point-to-point flight ever undertaken by an unmanned aircraft and took 23 hours and 23 minutes. In October 2003, the first totally autonomous flight across the Atlantic by a computer-controlled model aircraft occurred. UAVs are now an established feature of modern warfare, carrying out pinpoint attacks under the control of a remote operator.

Filled with thousands of full-color photographs and fact-filled profiles on 300 aircrafts, Flight follows the history of mankind taking to the skies. From Da Vinci's drawings of flying machines to Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight in The Spirit of Saint Louis to the Boeing 767, this reference guide breaks down the complete story of aviation into easy-to-read facts and sidebar pullouts.

On National Read A Book Day in September, we asked our Instagram and Twitter followers to name their favorite aviation-related page-turners. As you can imagine, the response was strong. To distill the list, we asked GE Aviation employees to rate the top 20 books on a five-star scale. The Aviation must-reads you see here were ranked based on the total number of stars each book received.

What We Like: Wings is a heartfelt story of the history of aviation. Crouch does a great job providing a thorough analysis of aviation history thus far and writes in a tone anyone can follow.

he George W. Jalonick III and Dorothy Cockrell Jalonick Memorial Distinguished Lecture Series was established to inform and enlighten the public about the history of flight by bringing aviation notables to the Dallas community. Dorothy and George Jalonick III were special friends of The University of Texas at Dallas and the History of Aviation Collection (HAC). The series was endowed in their memory by the late George W. Jalonick IV and friends of the Jalonick family.

For the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans, our fleet of historic aircraft recreate, remind, and reinforce the lessons learned from the defining moments in American military aviation history.

This beautiful Leporello book folds out to a stunning 139cm panorama detailing the history and mythology of flight, from the legendary attempts of Icarus, to the revolutionary innovations of the Jet Age! The wrap-around cover provides educational entries for each panel, detailing notable benchmarks in the history of aviation.

Golden Cosmos was set up in 2010 as a collborative moniker for German artistic couple Daniel Doltz and Doris Freigofas. Their deep knowledge of traditional printmaking techniques and experiences in self publishing that have won them widespread critical acclaim in illustration circles made them the perfect choice for our trademark concertina series. Their bold use of colour and adeptness for shape and form recall the bold patterns and geometry of early Russian constructivism, with a nod to mid century French commercial art. Whilst the book itself can be read, displayed or framed, the new wraparound cover allows us at Nobrow to add an educational element to the series, with entries for each panel of the concertina detailing the notable benchmarks in the history and mythology of aviation.

Newly updated, the complete history of naval aviation, from pioneering days when the first biplanes were catapulted from converted destroyers through to the high-performance jets patrolling the world's seas today, fully illustrated throughout.
