Palette size

Does palette size refer to the number of colors you see within a certain palette?  I'm trying to replicate a palette from an older version of XaoS and when I enter it into version 4.2 it gives me way too many colors with a palette size of 65534.  The older version shows a palette size of 254.  The palette configuration is Algorithm 1, Seed 22853. 

I have no idea how to use the palette editor and perhaps that could be a tool to assist me?  I was wondering if there are in-depth instructions on using the various palette features.

Thank you Zoltan.  I actually don't see mention of what the term palette size means and I'm just trying to mimic a gradient I like.

The first photo shows the colors I want, basically greens, blue white and purple.  The second image shows the result I get in the newer version of XaoS when I enter custom palette seed number 22853, algorithm 1.  How do I scale down a palette to 5 colors or so?

How do I use the Palette Editor?
