Trouble Rendering Burning Ship Fractal

Every time I try to type the formula {ABS(RE(Z));ABS(IM(Z))}^2+C into
the user formula box, XaoS automatically changes it back to Z^2+C and
recalculates the same image of the Mandelbrot set. What am I doing
wrong?

Try using something like the following formula within the User Box:

     POWI(RABS(Z)+I*RABS(IM(Z));2)+C
