Dear List,

this is a short note about the latest version 4.0.
Maybe not well-known yet: we released 4.0 on 1 April 2020 (on the 42th birthday of Jan Hubička's, one of the original authors).

The new version is based on Qt so XaoS has a modern look and feel on all supported systems. XaoS runs well on Windows, Mac, Linux (including the Raspberry Pi) and FreeBSD---all systems are supported that are able to run Qt.
Several languages are supported, at least the menu options are translated into Czech, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish and Swedish (and of course, English). Documentation has been moved to GitHub.

I just learned that XaoS 4.0 will be available on Ubuntu 20.10 and Debian 11. (It is already available for download, e.g. at https://packages.debian.org/en/sid/xaos.)

XaoS has a new web page at https://xaos-project.github.io/ with an embedded version of XaoS.js. The visitors can do some basic zooming into the Mandelbrot set without installing anything on their computer. We plan to compile XaoS as a web application---this is an on-going project.

We also welcome Anurag Aggarwal who contributes code to XaoS this year as a Google Summer of Code student from May to August. He already made some minor improvements on the codebase.

We acknowledge the kind help of Fractal Foundation in supporting our development. With their help the new installation files are signed and can be easier to install for newcomers.

As always, your feedback is very welcome!

Best regards,
Zoltan
