You might think that table decor is something that you only use at your wedding. However, this can add ambiance to any meal. It can turn a Thursday night into a dinner party. It can even impress your date. Here is how to do table decor on a budget for your next dinner party or anniversary.

Head to the garden. Sure, you might not have bushels of roses in bloom just waiting to be used as table decor. However, you might be able to bring in twigs or even leaves as a free tablescape. Just make sure that there aren't any bugs or even unpleasant smells. This is free table decor.

Find the right height. There are designers who specialize solely in table decor. At Hollywood parties you'll often find elaborate, tall centerpieces that almost look like trees. This has one major draw back, you can't see the person sitting across for you. However, this also accentuates a high ceiling & adds instant drama. When planning your table decor, make sure that it's still conducive to conversation. Make the pieces high enough so that people can still see each other. You can even use willow branches that are inexpensive & won't entirely block your view.

Base your table decor around your meal. This is often used on the show Simply Homemade. The host makes a different tablescape for every meal & she considers it necessary. This can be expensive so it can be used just for special occasions. Base your tablescape off of the colors of the food or even the country of origin. This turns a simple dinner into an experience. This is a way to show off your own personal style to your friends & family even if you haven't been able to plan a wedding yet.

Use candlelight. This instantly makes any room feel romantic. Tea lights are inexpensive & you probably already have some lying around the house. It's free table decor. Just make sure that you don't leave the candles unattended. Even if you are just making your date macaroni & cheese she will appreciate the extra effort that you took to really create a mood.

Layer. This is an essential part of table decor. You'll often see at weddings where a solid tablecloth is used with a sheer metallic overlay on top of it. This makes the room feel moody & even complicated. You can even put rose petals on top of your tablescape for added romance.

Hit the thrift stores. This is an ideal place to find table decor. Pick up mismatched pieces of china. They can be totally different or have the same theme or color palette. This way your guests will be able to remember which plate is theirs & it won't break the bank. Retro style is very popular with designers right now, so go straight to the source. Check on the bottom of the plate to make sure that your pieces are dishwasher & microwave safe.

Difficulty: Moderate
