Is SNIA responsible for or participates in initiatives like CMIS
(http://xml.coverpages.org/cmis.html) or is CMIS a parallel initiative
for content management abstraction?

OASIS is responsible for CMIS, from a consortia standpoint.
SNIA does not have an alliance formed with OASIS for CMIS, though
several members of OASIS CMIS are members of SNIA (and SNIA FCAS).
CMIS is a common interface to proprietary ECM repositories.
XAM could be used by ECM vendors to store their document data and
could have CMIS as a common interface to ISVs.
