Accordingto the legend, Inunaki is a "small and easy to miss" village in a forest located in Fukuoka Prefecture, to the east of the Inunaki Mountain next to the most upstream tributary of Inunaki Gawa and the western edge of Wakamiya.[1] The residents of the village refused to accept the Constitution of Japan, and extant the legitimacy of the Japanese government. Near the entrance to the village, there's a handwritten sign reading "The Japanese constitution is not in effect past here." In order to find the village, one must take a small side road past Old Inunaki Tunnel.[2] The original story takes place "sometime in the early 1970s" and follows a young couple, who were on their way to Hisayama when unexpectedly their car engine broke. They left their car and headed up the forest to seek help. They eventually entered a village that seemed abandoned. They were approached by a "crazy old man" who welcomed them to Inunaki before murdering them with a sickle.[3]
There's another story related to the village, which tells of a telephone booth near the Inunaki bridge, which allegedly gets a call coming from Inunaki Village every night. The person that answers that call will be cursed and transported to the village. The victim of the curse will start to lose control of their body and mind before eventually dying.[4]
In April 1889, due to the introduction of the town and village system (町村制, Chosonsei), Inunakidani was integrated into the nearby Yoshikawa Village, which over the years merged with other areas, eventually creating the city of Miyawaka. The site of Inunakidani was submerged in 1986, due to the construction of the Inunaki Dam (completed in 1994).[1] Residents of the village were relocated to Wakita.[3]
The area of the Old Inunaki Tunnel has been considered to be haunted due to a number of murder cases connected to this place.[6] The tunnel's construction was completed in 1949. A new tunnel was constructed nearby in 1975. The unused old tunnel became dangerous due to a lack of maintenance.[3] On 6 December 1988, five young men abducted and tortured a factory worker whose car they wanted to steal, burning him to death with gasoline inside the old tunnel.[7] The perpetrators were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment.[3] The entrance to the old tunnel has been made inaccessible from both sides.[6] In 2000, a dead body was found in a nearby dam.[7]
The first online mentions of the Inunaki Village urban legend date back to 1999, when Nippon TV received a letter from an anonymous person, which described the legend of the couple murdered in the village and urged the Nippon TV crew to visit the place. The anonymous letter was titled "The Village in Japan That Isn't Part of Japan".[2]
The legend of Inunaki Village inspired several pieces of media. A horror film Howling Village [ja] (犬鳴村) directed by Takashi Shimizu, based on the legend, was released in February 2019. The release of the film contributed to the popularity of the Old Inunaki Tunnel, leading to an increase in trespassing and vandalism in the area.[6] In November of the same year, a horror game titled Inunaki Tunnel [ja] was released on Steam.[8] The story also inspired a 2016 anime television series The Lost Village (迷家-マヨイガ-) and The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel (トンネルの奇譚) manga by Junji Ito.[9]
They put Umeyama in the trunk of his car and beat him with cranks, wrenches and other tools. They tried to get rid of the body at Rikimaru Dam, but fearing the body would float they instead decided to burn the body so it would be impossible to identify who he was and made for the abandoned Old Inunaki Tunnel.
Driven mad with pain, Umeyama ran all the way back to the entrance of the tunnel where all of his strength finally left his body and he collapsed. The youths left, but they wanted to check that Umeyama was actually dead this time, so they returned to the scene and made sure he was no longer moving before returning to Fukuoka City.

Keiji finds a nearby ladder next to a tree and uses it to climb over the wall. But before he climbs it, Keiji will also notice a doll lying on the ground. When he picks it up, the game will notify the player that the camcorder will pick up anything that has a strong spiritual energy. After that, he climbs over the wall and starts venturing into the tunnel.
Keiji will start walking through the tunnel. Encountering many different turns and overgrown weeds on the grown. Hidden inside some of the overgrown weeds, is a red origami crane, when he unfolds it, he discovers a note is written inside. It says:
As he continues onwards, he will notice some abandoned cars that have been completely wrecked and hearing ghostly noises in the tunnel. Eventually he comes across a blocked path in the tunnel, with no possible way to get around it. Luckily, a deserted truck is right in front of him. However, he will need a key in order to drive the truck. Keiji will then notice an unpaved path the leads up the hill. After a while, he finds a house with no one living inside. And if one were to look closely, Keiji can also spot a corpse of a construction worker hanging on a tree. When looking around the house, Keiji finds a ring on the side of the house, in which Keiji can pull to open up the entrance to the house. There he finds another red origami crane on the ground; he unfolds it to find a note that reads:
Once he finishes reading it, a loud rumbling sound is heard before coming to a complete stop. Keiji will then notice a jizo statue that's lying on the floor (In which he can choose whether or not to grab it and place it on the altar outside of the house.) When he turns around to leave, he finds the corpse he saw earlier (Or just discovering it) has fallen onto the ground. Luckily, the worker is carrying the key to the truck. So, Keiji proceeds to climb back down the hill to activate the truck. After clearing up the path, Keiji can continue his adventure through the tunnel. While walking, he comes across a flat body truck that turns on all of a sudden and drives off. Then Keiji discovers a rusty-looking bus with another origami crane on one of the seats. The note reads:
After leaving the bus, Keiji will eventually reach to another section of the tunnel where a cemetery lies. Keiji can read the names of the people who are buried there, but on one of the graves (Takahashi's), he will find another origami crane on the ground. The note reads:
Within the said cemetery, there is also a small house in which behind it, is another jizo statue. (In which Keiji can choose whether or not to grab it and place it on the altar in the cemetery). He then comes across a riddle on the ground, in which he must solve before he can move on. The riddle reads:
Right behind the riddle is a clock sitting on a pedestal in which Keiji must change the clock arms to the correct time. (The correct time being 4 o'clock). After the clock chimes, the gates will open up. There, Keiji discovers a telephone booth and goes inside. He picks up the phone and hears a girl's voice on the other end. She says: "Help...Me..." Then the call ends. However, Keiji could not leave the telephone booth and is trapped inside. He hears the sound of someone walking closer and closer to the telephone booth...before a loud smack on the booth's window is heard, leaving a bloody handprint on it. Afterwards, Keiji is now able to leave and walk on the dirt path. Then he encounters a deserted van with its door slightly open. But he is unable to open it. As he continues exploring the woods, he discovers a pair of tongs and uses it to open the door to the van. Inside the van, he is able to get ahold of an axe. Keiji then proceeds to walk through the forest and discovers a stream in front of him. With no way to get by, he uses the axe to cut down an old tree to get across.
As Keiji continues down the path, he then hears the sound of a dog barking nearby. As he follows the noise, the barking turns to whimpering. And Keiji eventually discovers a dog who unfortunately got stuck in between a barbed wire fence. Keiji can choose whether or not to help the dog. If he does, the dog will happily pant and wags its tail and will actually guide Keiji to another jizo statue. The dog will eventually stop at a certain spot and will dig up the missing statue along with a note. The note reads:
