Does anyone have pearls of wisdom on what hose type/grade to use for
the remote clutch and brake reservoirs?

Ive just replaced my brake&clutch system (new master-cylinders etc),
but cant seem to get the right hose for the remote reservoirs that sit
by the bottom of the passenger window.

When pulling the old stuff off, one hose was clear plastic and the
rest perished rubber hose.

clear is very handy (to see the state of the fluid plus if theres any
air bubbles), so I optimistically (foolishly) tried some 6mm clear
hose (acetate? not garden hose!!) from Mitre10....but that has been
eaten in a couple of weeks(its porrus! yes, i did know better...)...so
now im looking at other options.

Can I use standard carburetter fuel line? or does it have to be proper
brake hose (given that it is non-pressure - what WONT brake fluid
dissolve?)...long lengths of brake hose are hard to come by because
everyone sells made up hose. ideally if prefer clear like the
original, but what is it & where can i get some...any ideas?

You can buy hose from Safe-R-brakes or pretty much any brake servicing
company. Not cheap. As far as I know you should use the braided "rubber"
hoses.

Safe R Brakes use a Nitrile based hose, which if you look around the
internet is NOT good for brake fluid. The web recommends Ethylene
Propylene base ( EPDM, EPD,EPR, EP ). Does anybody now where in NZ you
can get this hose? I need to replace my clutch reservoir line. Braided
rubber line would not be so good as it's designed for crimp type
connections, and the X19 uses hoses clamps. Safe R Brakes say's there
hose they use does not weep, they do not stock 1/4" or 6.3mm hose
which the X19 uses. They have 5 or 7.5mm I recall when I talked to
them. Any recommendations?

mine Exxy had greenish clear plastic hose ex-factory, but the clear
plastic I put on (as per my above message) wept after a week or so
(not sure what type of plastic)....so i am now conducting an
experiment with PVC hose (sold to me by someone in the brake industry
as ok), against the weepy plastic(above), and also against standard
fuel line. I'll post the results in a week or so...

you need the 6mm (at a squeeze for brake, but ok for clutch) or 6.3mm
hose...NB the clutch line is a smaller bore than the brake line

After lots of ringing around, have found some real brake hose, same as
the brake line with the braded cloth around the out side. Stirling
Clutch and Brake have it for $30 per meter, comes in 2 meter lenghts.
You can get clear plastic brake hose from USA, but costs something
like US$8 per foot. My clutch needs 6.3mm (1/4") hose, but I think
it's the same for the brake, but have not measured it. Next time I
would properly run 1/4" steel tubing most of the way and use hose to
join it. The angle of the nipple coming out of the clutch caused the
hose to kink, so I got some 1/4" steel tubing and made a 90 degree
bend, so now the hose comes straight out the back.

Anyway my car is all road legal again after some 4 to 5 years parked
up, and is great to drive again.

just found on Wikipedia in german (thanks to google translater) an
article on replacing brake hose in X1/9s,

aparently VW beetles also have remote brake reserviors and use the
same stuff so may try ringing around them... Also the article mentions
that its cheaper to use industrial supplier of EPDM hose...so will
check that out also....and yes, you can get the origonal green clear
"Cavis Davis" hose from the US..i wonder who distributes that here(car
restoration people)??...so ill do some chasing up on that too over the
next few weeks.

My PVC hose test result is fail (it weeps also), as suspected, so the
brake hose salesperson (actually the distributer was who I got the
advice from) was wrong (I'll be taking it back for a refund!)...

here is the translated link top the X1/9 article in german:
