I think
Mathias & egbert team are working of r5xx 3d work
Alex & Dave (well mainly dave) are working on RS690 3d

So people,
are we happy with fglrx, or do we need to concentrate more on open
source development?

I'm driving a display over an HDMI connection. I've tried all three
drivers but have only had success with the radeonHD driver. My case
may be an outlier, but fglrx in its current state doesn't yet suit all
my needs. There are enough people involved here I doubt we have to
choose one development effort over the others - I hope they all
succeed. However, I've been focussed on the radeonHD development.

I've never run fglrx on my RS690 board and I never intend to; my
experience of it on my X1300 was that it would cause random hangs about
once a week and I was delighted when I could replace it with the xorg
ati driver.

I'm not really that fussed about 3D support though; it's a nice to have
but not essential for me. However if we could get XvMC or other similar
video decoding acceleration that would really rock.

I agree - Xv and XvMC are at the top of my list. I've got a lot of
stuttering with DVD playback and MythTV. With the radeonHD
development I gather that work on Xv and XvMC is going to wait until
after the 3D work advances. Not the way I'd prioritize things, but
things do seem to be progressing quickly, so I hope it'll be moot in a
matter of weeks.

on RS690

2D needs to be implemented on top of 3D
XVideo needs to be implemented on top of 3D

AVIVO has not been documented by AMD for opensource
(Xvmc is unlikely without it)

3D documentation is not released.

RadeonHD has started on R5xx 3D work based on info drom AMD.

fglrx has 2D & 3D acceleration (plus XVideo overlay via texuredvideo)

Ah, well, that's very useful info. So I'll change my opinion (that's
allowed on the internet, isn't it?). Since the 3D work for the
radeonHD driver seems to be a prerequisite for the features that
really interest me, I'm now 100% in favor of it. Full speed ahead!

I'm keen on the open source option as well, with my
priorities focused on video playback:
xv,
xvmc,
and hardware assisted H.264 decoding (looks like all the
major players need to pull finger on this one.(although
Intel to a lesser extent))
All these features are up and running under Windows
machines, yet we have to wait and fight for them?

i gave up on fglrx, and am running radeonhd from the ubuntu ppa. overall pretty happy, but the lack of dri and 3d is limiting. so i vote for the free driver

i've given up on the current fglrx driver. i can't use it with myth tv -
hd viewing is barely tolerable and switching channels garbles up the
display. vista driver works like a champ though, so i'm stuck with
windows for now.

my vote is with a free driver that does a decent video playback job.
