I have a problem which I can't find a solution to. It might be easy to fix but I don't know much about this. Anyway...

I have installed mythbuntu 7.10 on my HTPC. I have onboard graphics with AMD690G chipset and X1250 graphics card. The tv is an old fashioned one (not lcd or plasma, don't know the name in english) with scart as the only option for input. I use vga - scart to connect the computer and tv.

The problem is that I'm getting bright horizontal lines across the screen when the scene is dark, I'm guessing the lines are allways there but hard to see on brighter scenes. The lines do not move or anything. It's really annoying because a lot of tv shows and dvd movies has (a lot of) dark scenes in them. The lines appears in desktop mode, inside mythtv and vlc...but as I said earlier, the lines are probably allways there. I have the proprietary driver from ATI.

A clue what might be the problem? Anyone?

The lines are probably created by the connection cable or connectors
you use for the TV.

Have in mind that CRT Tvs especially those with internal antenna and
cheap Tvs generally get a lot of visual noise which is generated
mostly by PCs cooling fans.

If the cable does not have noise filters or it is cheap and bad
quality you will face troubles.
We are talking about analog signal which requires good connections and
cable materials in order to avoid strange artifacts.

You connect VGA to SCART a bit risky... Also try to set a proper
refresh rate for your TV via AMDCCCLE panel, most TVs work at 50Hz
rate.

I don't think it is driver related but try it with windows... This way
we can find out more about the issue.

At your VGA monitor do you notice those lines?

Hi, and thanks for the quick response.

The lines don't appear on the vga monitor. But I don't think its the vga-scart converter is the problem...as I said the "motherboard-startup-screen" don't have the lines, nor does the loading-grub-screen or the screen where mythbuntu is booting up with the progress bar. They appear only when mythbuntu is booted up.

I couldn't find amdcccle, instead I tried to change the screen resolution to see if that could be the cause. Then things went worse. When I changed the screen resolution with either "display settings" or "screen and graphics" the quality became worse. And after the first time that I changed resolution I lost the possibility too go back to the old one. At the end I only had 3 or 4 valid options for resolution/frequency and finally the screen went totally black, even on the vga monitor...guess I have to reinstall mythbuntu and start from scratch.

But it really bugs me since the darker scenes look fine when i'm in the startup process but the lines appear when the OS is up and running...can't figure that out.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try and get amdcccle installed first thing after the os is installed and see what happens...

/Tomas

Check the refresh rate too!!

You mean that Ubuntu package provides only the driver and separetely
AMD Catalyst Control Center?
Are they idiots??
Without the panel how can you check and manage resolutions, refresh
rates, colors and screen in real time??

What are they doing? Being friendly doesn't mean that user must not do
or know anything about his/hers system!!

Yes, actually there are four packages for fglrx drivers in Ubuntu.

fglrx-amdcccle
fglrx-kernel-source
xorg-driver-fglrx
xorg-driver-fglrx-dev

Thomas, try to check under Application->Accessories, and see if you
have ATI Catalyst Control Center. If not, do
sudo apt-get install flgrx-amdcccle to install it.

Good luck.

Tomas, would you please share your xorg.conf Modeline configuration
with me?

I am using a similar setup as yours, with an Asus barebone with Radeon
X1250 graphics and a VGA-to-SCART cable.
Currently using the following Modeline:
Modeline "960x540" 20.222 960 1048 1120 1288 540 561 570 628
interlace +hsync +vsync

But unfortunately this gives a rolling screen. As it is in a brownish
tan, I think this is mainly a sync problem.
