black screen with x1250 in GA-MA69VM-S2 MB and fglrx 8.37.6 on Ubuntu 7.10

Hello,

I've installed this driver from the official Ubuntu repo. Version
8.471 obtained from ATI homepage does exactly the same: when X is
started, the screen goes blank, and killing X or changing to VTs
doesn't work. Otherwise the machine is up, only the screen can't be
brought back to life.

Has anyone had the same problem? Any ideas how to solve it?
