National Day of Prayer In DeFuniak Springs
Almost 1000 people stood in the gap for the second annual National Day of Prayer event in DeFuniak Springs. National Day of Prayer events were held all over our area as local believers took time Thursday to pray from their cities, state, nation, schools, homes and military.
This is the second year a Stand In The Gap National Day of Prayer event was held where people are invited to stand and pray around the almost completely circular Lake DeFuniak. Church bells and Shofar blasts signaled the time to pray. Prayers were called out for the government, family, church, education, media, business and military. The nearly 1000 attendees also sang and the local ROTC posted the colors. Second Chronicles 7:14 was read for the day’s scripture.
The National Day of Prayer was first held by the Continental Congress in 1775 and Congress made it official in 1952. The yearly event has local Christians and Jews across the nation gathering in public places to pray together.

State Designated as Academically High-Performing School Districts Walton County School District Superintendent
Carlene Anderson says the district has been designated as one of only eleven
districts in the state as an Academically High-Performing School
District. The designation comes through legislation
with several criteria and any district who meets the criteria, can claim the
designation. Despite being one of the top districts in the state, Okaloosa did
not qualify for this particular designation. The statute says the district if:
beginning with the 2004-2005 school year, earns a grade of “A” for 2 consecutive
years; and has no district-operated school that earns a grade of “F”. For each
of those districts, the district also must meet the additional requirements of
academically high performing school districts: class size compliance and audit
compliance.

SWFD Donates Ambulance To DFS City Marshall’s Office
In the continuing effort of the South Walton Fire District to build partnerships and assist area public safety agencies the district donated a surplus ambulance to the Office of the City Marshal DeFuniak Springs Police (DFSP).
City Marshall Mike Adkinson with the DeFuniak Springs Police requested the donation of the ambulance for a community project. The police are faced with many challenges in providing service to the community; with limited resources and an increase in demands for service, they look for creative ways to meet their needs.
The surplus ambulance will be used as a Community Service Unit / Mobile Command Post and will provide a asset for the department and citizens. The SWFD says they are pleased to be in the position to assist a neighboring public safety entity enhance the level of service they can provide their community.
The surplus ambulance was originally donated by Walton County to the SWFD when they began providing advance life support (ALS) transport service to the citizens and visitors of south Walton. SWFD Fire Chief, Rick Talbert says they feel it is only fitting they could extend the same opportunity to the Office of the City Marshal DeFuniak Springs in their effort to meet the needs of their community.
