THRIFT-WAY SUPERMARKET

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, FL

Today is the 216th day of the year. There are 149 days left in the year.

Acting on tip from a Dutch informer, the Nazi Gestapo captures 15-year-old Jewish diarist Anne Frank and her family in a sealed-off area of an Amsterdam warehouse. The Franks had taken shelter there in 1942 out of fear of deportation to a Nazi concentration camp. They occupied the small space with another Jewish family and a single Jewish man, and were aided by Christian friends, who brought them food and supplies. Anne spent much of her time in the “secret annex” working on her diary. The diary survived the war, overlooked by the Gestapo that discovered the hiding place, but Anne and nearly all of the others perished in the Nazi death camps.

 SUSPECT ARRESTED IN HOME/CAR BURGLARIES

A 27-year-old Walton County man is behind bars after admitting to Walton County deputies he was “high on Xanax” and running from the law while he and his associates burglarized neighborhoods in Rosemary Beach.

Jeremy Ray Thomas of Inlet Beach told investigators on the night of July 30th he was with multiple other individuals who he knew were checking door handles of vehicles, “rummaging” through vehicles, checking door handles of residence, and burglarizing houses in the area of West Water Street. A resident called 911 after she says she had a suspicious encounter with someone who had broken into her pool deck.

Thomas admitted to jumping a fence or gate and being present in the back of a residence, which had a pool.  Thomas was arrested by deputies and charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling after a positive ID was made during a photo line-up with the victim. He was booked into the Walton County Jail.

The Sheriff is committed to the apprehension of those committing burglaries and other crimes in our county. However, they encourage residents to please remember to HIDE your things, LOCK your car, and TAKE your keys to avoid becoming a victim to these crimes of opportunity.

Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast Rates Among Florida’s Best for Patient Experience

Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach has received a 5 Star Hospital Rating based on the latest quarterly results from the nation’s only standardized patient satisfaction survey. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) utilizes star ratings to make it easier for consumers to choose a hospital and understand the quality of care it delivers.

Roger Hall, president of Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast said, “We are truly honored to receive this distinction from CMS and our patients.

The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey is a publicly reported survey to measure patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience. The survey presents patients with questions based on 11 measures and includes topics such as how well nurses and doctors communicate with patients; how responsive hospital staff are to patient needs; how clean and quiet hospital environments are; and how well patients are prepared for post-hospital settings.

Hall said, The 5 Star Rating is granted to us by the people we serve and reflects our commitment to deliver superior healthcare to the Emerald Coast communities.”

The hub of the Sacred Heart system is its 566-bed Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola that includes the region’s only Children’s Hospital, a Level II Trauma Center, a Cancer Center affiliated with MD Anderson Cancer Network and a Heart & Vascular Institute.

CAR BURGLARY SUSPECT CAPTURED FOLLOWING CAR AND FOOT CHASE

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies responding to a car burglary spotted the suspect’s car and took him into custody following a brief chase that caused minor damage to two patrol cars and a Waste Management commercial vehicle.

Deputies got a 9-1-1 call just before 9 a.m. from a man at the Tom Thumb Convenience store near the intersection of Beal Parkway and Green Acres Road. He said he was inside the store paying for his gas when another man climbed into his car. The car owner said a debit card was missing.

The suspect vehicle, a purple Lincoln town car, was seen turning onto Carmel Avenue. The driver led deputies on a short car chase before he got out at Pier One Apartments and fled on foot. He was taken into custody after a foot pursuit. During the chase the driver hit two patrol cars and a Waste Management vehicle. No one was injured. Two passengers inside the suspect’s car were detained at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol will investigate the crash.

NEW JAIL NEEDED FOR GENEVA COUNTY

Geneva County, Alabama Sheriff Tony Helms needs a new jail.

Currently, the main structure of the county jail is over 60 years with two fiberglass dome additions that are ten years old.  The current capacity is depending on classification of the offender. The Sheriff says they need a 120 man jail.  Currently they have 83 in jail -16 of those are women.

Last week, commissioners heard a proposal from an Indian tribe to build a casino in Geneva County with a lure of much needed dollars to help pay for a new jail.  Sheriff Helms says a 120 man facility would cost around 8 million dollars and they have passed a sales tax to pay for it. Commissioners said they would consider the offer but took no further action.

The Sheriff says they are still in the planning stages and nothing is set in stone.
