NSSF’s Project ChildSafe Names Amanda Van Meer a “S.A.F.E. Summer” Local Champion in Firearm Safety
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has recognized Amanda Van Meer, owner and proprietor of family-owned Enforcement Firearms in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, as a “Local Champion” for her efforts to promote firearm safety in the region. The recognition comes as NSSF continues its third annual Project ChildSafe “S.A.F.E. Summer” campaign to emphasize the importance of responsible firearm storage – particularly while children are home from school and more likely to be unattended.
Amanda was selected for her work advocating for firearm safety in her community. She often appears at community events where she distributes materials and gun locks and engages local firearm owners in discussions on keeping their homes, children and visitors safe. Every gun sold at Enforcement Firearms is paired with a lock, and Amanda is adamant that every gun owner that leaves her store be well-versed on how to use the safety device properly to help prevent firearm accidents.
“As a mother, gun owner and local business owner, I’m diligent about firearm safety and teaching others how to protect their families,” said Van Meer. “Project ChildSafe is a great program that I use to promote firearm safety to my customers at Enforcement Firearms and to the community.”
“Continuing education around firearm safety regardless of skill level is important,” commented Van Meer. “Every gun I sell leaves my store with a lock, and the owner, whether a novice or seasoned, should always know how to properly secure any firearms. It is important that everyone leave my store with the basic knowledge to help prevent accidents.”
S.A.F.E. Summer is an extension of NSSF’s Project ChildSafe campaign. Consistent with Project ChildSafe’s overarching message of “Own It? Respect It. Secure It,” the S.A.F.E. Summer effort is a reminder that proper firearm storage is the #1 way to help prevent firearm accidents, theft and misuse.
"S.A.F.E." serves as an acronym for Store your firearms responsibly when not in use; Be Aware of those around you who should not have unauthorized access to guns; Focus on your responsibility as a firearm owner and Educate yourself and others about safe firearm handling and storage. The effort is focused on providing education and tools that helps gun owners take responsible action to keep their families and communities safer.
“We’re very grateful for the work of people like Amanda Van Meer,” said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. “They are great examples of how the firearms-owning community is committed to safety and personal responsibility, and their work is instrumental in helping reduce firearm accidents.”
NSSF launched Project ChildSafe in 1999 (prior to 2003 the program was called Project HomeSafe) as a nationwide initiative to promote firearms responsibility and provide safety education to all gun owners. While children are a focus, Project ChildSafe is intended to help young people and adults practice greater firearm safety in the home.

Gaetz Neighborhood Day
South Walton County residents can meet one-on-one with their Senator next Wednesday, July 15th, as Senator Don Gaetz continues his tradition of bringing his Senate office to Northwest Florida neighborhoods. From early morning until evening, the second-term legislator will visit individually with citizens, listen to the concerns of business and civic leaders, meet local organizations and employers and walk door-to-door.
“Neighborhood Day” begins at 7:15 a.m. with Gaetz speaking to the Walton County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Directly following at 8:30 a.m., Gaetz will visit MarJam Supply Company, a business that successfully created new jobs in Santa Rosa Beach as a result of grant monies awarded through the Oil Spill Economic Recovery Act, which the Senator sponsored.
At 8:45 a.m., tune into WZEP’s 1460 AM for “The Cadillac and Kyzer Show” to hear Gaetz’ interview with radio personalities Jason Kyzer and Tom Fleetwood.
From 9:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. and again from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Senator Gaetz will relocate his Senate office to the Walton County Chamber of Commerce, located at 63 South Centre Trail. There, he'll meet individually with citizens of South Walton. It’s not a “town hall” or group meeting. There are no speeches. As he has done during similar “Neighborhood Days” over the past nine years, Gaetz wants to listen to whatever is on folks’ minds. Individuals having problems with state agencies are also invited to stop by.
Constituents don't need an appointment, but can drop in at the Walton County Chamber of Commerce any time during morning or afternoon office hours. However, if a specific time is desired, please call 1-(866)-450-4DON toll-free from anywhere in Florida.
In the late afternoon, Gaetz will hit the streets of South Walton, walking door-to-door to meet with residents in their own homes. Gaetz has knocked on over 26,000 doors in Northwest Florida since first seeking his Senate seat in 2006.
"The best ideas don't come from Washington or Tallahassee. All too often that's where the problems are," Gaetz said. "I learn so much from talking with people on their own doorsteps and sitting at their kitchen tables."
As Senator for Northwest Florida, Gaetz serves as Chairman of the Education Appropriations Committee with responsibility for funding early learning, K-12 public schools, charter schools, state colleges and state universities. In addition, he is a member of Senate committees with jurisdiction over education policy, ethics and elections, health policy and rules. He served as President of the Senate from 2012-2014.
