 FLAG FLYS…FOR NOW

By: T.H. Merritt

Numerous callers were concerned yesterday when they noticed the Confederate Flag missing from the War Memorial at the Walton County Courthouse.  WZEP was inundated with calls throughout the morning asking if the flag had been stolen or if the County Commissioners had ordered it removed.

Walton County Public Information Manager Louis Svelah says his office also received numerous inquiries:

Since the Governor ordered all U.S. and state flags at half-staff in honor of the slain Marines and Sailors by a gunman in Chattanooga, TN last week, the Confederate flag was lowered during the observance but will be returned at the end of the period of mourning.

The status of the flag is a hot topic these days as Santa Rosa Beach lawyer Daniel Uhlfelder is, once again, trying to have it removed. At last week’s county commission meeting, Uhlfelder demanded commissioners remove it immediately.  However, commissioners delayed a vote until their next meeting Tuesday, July 28th, to give other residents a chance to express their views.

Uhlfelder contends the flag is a symbol of hate and racism and submitted a petition with 1,300 signatures supporting his position.

The flag was raised by County Commissioners in 1964 at the War Memorial which honors local Confederate soldiers killed in battle during the Civil War.

Technically, Confederate Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines who fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, which was approved 23 May,1958. This made all Confederate Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans in terms of service benefits.  The last surviving Confederate Veteran died December 19, 1959.

Commissioners will hear from the public before making their decision. The meeting is scheduled to start at 9 AM, Tuesday July 28th at the Walton County Courthouse Boardroom in Defuniak Springs.  WZEP First News Now will be in the Chamber when the decision is made.

 SEPARATE CRASHES KILL TWO

A 25 year-old Fort Walton Beach man was killed Wednesday morning when his motorcycle crashed at State Rd. 85 and 123 in Okaloosa County.

State Troopers say Anthony Lee Coleman, of Fort Walton Beach, lost control of his motorcycle on the entrance ramp, overturned and crashed into the guardrail.

Coleman was pronounced dead at FWB Medical Center.

Another crash, in Bay County, took the life of an unidentified Panama City resident on U.S. Hwy 98 in Bay County Tuesday night.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the 48 year old was riding a pedalcycle attempting to cross Hwy. 98 east of Cauley Avenue when it was struck by a 2001 Toyoto Avalon being driven 75 year old Joan Tusikiwicz of Panama City.  The driver was was ejected off the pedalcycle and landed in the westbound lane of Hwy. 98.

TRIO OF JUVENILES CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH CAR BURGLARIES

An Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputy who spotted something suspicious in Mary Esther conducted a traffic stop that led to the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen property. It also led to felony car burglary charges against three boys - ages eleven, thirteen, and sixteen.

The deputy spotted two juveniles running behind a closed business on Mary Esther Cut-off shortly before six a.m. July 18th. Once they saw the patrol car, both turned and ran back the other direction towards the Dollar Tree. The deputy then saw a car leaving the parking lot of the Dollar Tree and conducted a traffic top as it did not have its lights on. After consent to search was given, the deputy found multiple credit cards belonging to different individuals in a backpack along with other apparent stolen items.

The defendants are also accused of taking $5450 worth of personal property, including an expensive bicycle, from a car parked at a home on LaFitte Crescent in Fort Walton Beach - then stashing the stolen property at one of their homes. The three Fort Walton Beach area residents are charged with burglary and grand theft.  It is WZEPs news policy to withhold the names of juveniles unless the crime is a violent or forcible felony.

THIEF PULLS STUN GUN ON GOOD SAMARITAN

On Monday night,  just after 7:30pm Walton County deputies were dispatched to the Ralph Lauren Polo store at the Silver Sands Outlet in Miramar Beach.

A 911 caller stated two black females and a black male had stolen items and then ran from the store. The 911 caller told dispatchers one of the female suspects was currently in the parking lot of the old Winn-Dixie located across U.S. Highway 98 from the Silver Sands Outlet.

The caller was following the female when he told authorities she pulled out a stun gun/flashlight, zapped it three times, and threatened him.  The caller then told dispatchers that Deputies pulled up at that moment and detained the woman later identified as 25-year-old Lashamonique Moore of Pensacola.
