Church Robberies
WTVY reports, authorities on both sides' of the Florida and Alabama line are looking for those responsible for a rash of church burglaries this week.
On their website, channel 4 says, Reverend Samuel Dale Paul repaired a door damaged during a break-in. Reverend Paul says it appears the suspect used a hammer or crowbar to jimmy it, but did not actually make it into the sanctuary. Instead, the suspect took a lawn mower from a storage shed.
It was one of four churches burglarized in rural Northwest Holmes County.
A House of Worship in Samson was also hit.
The suspect or suspects have taken approximately $5,000 worth of church property.

The Walton County Board of Commissioners will hold their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, beginning at 4:00 PM at the Walton County Courthouse located at 571 US Highway 90, DeFuniak Springs, FL.
At 2:00 PM there will be a demonstration of the Walton County Fire Rescue Live Burn Training Trailer in the north courthouse parking lot. At 2:30 PM the commissioners are to hold a special meeting concerning strategic planning. At 3:00 PM a second special meeting concerns the request for qualifications for professional engineering services for solid waste management.
The regular meeting should start at 4:00pm with the consent agenda. This contains the bills, past minutes, surplus requests for a printer from the Walton County Clerk of the Circuit Court, a computer from the GIS Department and a computer and monitor from the Planning Department. There is a resolution to amend the budget for an unanticipated donation to Driftwood Estates Park in the amount of $3,000, approve a resolution to amend the budget for unanticipated revenue from the Hutchison Property for the in-house road materials in the amount of $15,000 and for the public works fund in the amount of $15,000, a resolution to amend the budget to roll forward reserves and expenditures that have previously been earmarked for the Scenic Gulf Drive Phase III Project in the amount of $90,000 and a resolution to amend the budget for the award of grant funds for the Roadside Beautification Assistance Program for the median improvement project on US 98 in the amount of $100,000. The consent agenda also has submitting Florida Forever Grant applications to FCT and DEP for the Natural Bridge Project, approve the 2009 agreement between Walton County and the Walton County Economic Development Alliance, Inc.
Under staff time, Ken Little, Citizens Services Director has a Children’s Day Resolution for the Early Learning Coalition of Okaloosa and Walton County. There is a public hearing to consider an amendment to the purchasing policies and procedures ordinance, Robert Benning has a request to close the boat ramp in Dogwood Terrace Subdivision, Thom Waldrop, Jr. has a request for the display of outdoor merchandise within the Scenic Corridor area during actual business hours and Pam Shaprio has a request the commission set aside the March 6, 2009 order and re-hear the JR Investments Vesting Determination Request to continue the Seabreeze Villas Project.
Sonny Mares, Executive Director of the Walton County TDC is listed with 2009 Western Walton County beach restoration project monitoring from Taylor Engineering, issue task order to WilsonMiller for development public parking along Santa Clara Street and Willow Street, redesign of the Inlet Beach Restroom Facility and associated permitting from WilsonMiller, TDC Council’s recommendation to provide funding for Top Sail Hill Preserve State Park to purchase a tram system, change order #2 for Miramar Regional Beach Access and approval of a contract to South Walton Turtle Watch, Inc.

The Office of County Attorney should ask to consider a proposed county-wide Noise Ordinance and schedule a Public Hearing date. The commissioners will also hold an Executive Session for Jolly Bay v. Walton County.

The DeFuniak Springs City Council is to meet this evening at 6:00pm for a regular agenda. And matters concerning the upcoming elections are on the agenda. Under her time, City Manager Kim Kirby has; Appoint Election Managers and Deputy Clerk (Kim Kirby, Bill Holloway, Sara Bowers, & Vanessa Mitchell) and appoint Canvassing Board (James Huffman, Don Harrison, & James Coffield). She also has listed approval of poll workers.
The race for City Marshall will be a two way race between Ray “Buddy” Burgess and Mark Weeks. Another race is for council seat 4. This will be between Billy Deisler and Henry Ennis. There will also be a race for the City Clerk between Elizabeth “Susie” Campbell-Work and Walter R. King. Mayor Harold Carpenter was unchallenged as is Wayne Graham for council seat 5. The election takes pace on Tuesday, April 14th and all DeFuniak Springs residents registered to vote can do so at the community center near Harbeson Field.
The agenda also lists approval of an educational reimbursement policy, adoption of a resolution in support of Amtrak restoring Sunset Limited rail passenger service in Florida, and NWFLOC nomination for the Board of Directors and nomination for 2009 Municipal Official of the Year.
