TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUGS, ARREST
By: T.H. Merritt, WZEP AM1460
A routine traffic stop for non-operational trailer tail-lights turned out to be anything but routine.
Walton County Sheriff’s Deputy Phillip Kent was responding to
a reckless driver call in the area of U.S. Hwy. 31 and Highway 90 around 10:30
Thursday morning when he spotted green GMC pick-up truck at the corner of Black Bass Boulevard
and Juniper Lake Road
with no working tail-lights.
The deputy stopped the vehicle driven by 35-year-old Jessica
Land. When land and her passenger could not produce a drivers license or other
identification, he asked the pair to step out of the vehicle. While attempting
to identify them, a Sgt. Nick Bearden and his K-9 Duko, began a sniff around
the exterior of the truck. The dog
alerted giving probable cause for a search.
A search of the vehicle found approximately 20 syringes, a
spoon containing residue, several other needles contained in a VHS cassette
case and a pill bottle containing a white powder which tested positive for
cocaine. Deputy Kent said he
has never seen that many syringes during a single traffic stop.
Deputy Kent
made contact with the driver, 35-year-old Jessica Land, and asked for her
Driver's License, which she did not have. The deputy asked Land and her
passenger to step out of the vehicle in efforts to gather their information
since they did not have identification on them.
While running their information through dispatch, K-9
Sergeant Nick Bearden conducted a free air sniff around the exterior of the GMC
pickup with K9 Duko. While completing the free-air sniff, K-9 Duko alerted to
the vehicle providing probably cause for a search.
“I have never seen that many syringes during one traffic
stop,” said Deputy Phillip Kent.
A jewelers bag of a clear liquid found inside the vehicle
also tested positive for Methamphetamine.
Land was arrested for possession of a controlled
substance, possession of cocaine, possession of narcotic equipment, and driving
on a suspended license. She was booked into the Walton County Jail – just a short
distance away.

HOTEL FIRE BELIEVED TO BE ARSON
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office
believes that a recent Niceville fire was intentionally set and is looking to
the community for information. On August 4th, the Niceville
Fire Department responded to a fire at the closed hotel attached to the old
Tisa’s Pizzeria located at 626 W. John Sims Parkway in Niceville and requested
the assistance of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The hotel and
restaurant have been closed for years and have recently been occupied by
homeless transients. It was recently purchased and within hours of the new
owner cutting off power and water to the property, a fire broke out. No
injuries were reported, but the initial review of the scene led arson
investigators to believe that the fire was intentionally set. Damages are estimated
at $150,000.
This investigation
remains open and ongoing. If a resident has information or wishes to report an
arson-related crime in Florida,
