Today is the 213th day of the year. There are 152 days left in the year.
On this day in 1961, amusement park lovers “head for the thrills” as Six Flags Over Texas, the first park in the Six Flags chain, opens. Located on 212 acres in Arlington, Texas, the park was the first to feature log flume and mine train rides and later, the first 360-degree looping roller coaster, modern parachute drop and man-made river rapids ride. The park also pioneered the concept of all-inclusive admission price; until then, separate entrance fees and individual ride tickets were the standard. During its opening year, a day at Six Flags cost $2.75 for an adult and $2.25 for a child. A hamburger sold for 50 cents and a soda set the buyer back a dime.

COUNTRY SINGER LYNN ANDERSON DEAD
Country singer Lynn Anderson, best known for her classic recording “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden,” died Thursday night of a heart attack at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
She had been hospitalized for pneumonia following a trip to Italy.
Lynn Rene Anderson was born Sept. 26, 1947 in Grand Forks, N.D., and raised in California. She came from a musical family.
For two years during the late 1960s, Ms. Anderson was a regular on the popular “Lawrence Welk Show,” an outlet which exposed her to a nationwide audience.
In 1970, Ms. Anderson moved from California to Nashville, and signed with Columbia Records. In October of that year, she released what would become her signature song, and one of country music’s classics. The lilting “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden,” penned by Joe South, became a worldwide hit with its immediately recognizable intro and catchy lyrics. In the U.S., it spent five weeks atop the country music charts and crossed over to the pop charts as well. The recording also netted Ms. Anderson a Best Female Country Vocal Performance Grammy Award, and in 1971, the Country Music Association named her Female Vocalist of the Year. Funeral services are pending. Lynn Anderson was 67.

SCHOOL BELLS WILL SOON BE RINGING
Big yellow buses, children gathering, and school bells ringing are fast approaching! Students will return to Walton County Schools on August 10th and Defuniak Springs Police want this school year to be safe and productive.
Motorized vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrian traffic will have an increased presence, especially around our schools.
Defuniak Springs Police would like to remind motorists to watch for kids crossing the street and walking near the roadway. Allow more time to drop off children during the first few days of school and be aware that children may be in your blind spot. Check your back seat when you arrive to ensure no kids get left behind. When school buses are stopped with their red lights flashing, drivers should stop on both sides of the road to allow loading and unloading.
Law enforcement will be out in force and aggressively enforcing traffic laws.
CRESTVIEW WOMAN ATTACKED IN DRIVEWAY AS SHE UNLOADS GROCERIES
A Crestview woman says she was unloading her groceries at her Crestview area home when a man attacked her and tried to shove her into the trunk of her car.
The 32-year old victim suffered cuts and abrasions in the July 26th incident on Brown Place. She told deputies the suspect first stood at the end of her driveway and asked if she needed help with her groceries and she told him no. She says he charged her and tried to push her into the trunk but she was able to force her way out as he punched her repeatedly in the back of the head and pulled her hair. The woman was finally able to get free and run to a neighbor’s home.
Witnesses in the area told deputies that they had seen a young black male, 20 to 30 years old, wearing a gray t-shirt and black Nike shorts running west from the home around the time of the 5:30 p.m. attack. One witness says the man appeared to be around 6’3” tall and weighed approximately 250 pounds.
The woman’s injuries were treated on scene by EMS before she was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center for evaluation. Anyone with information is asked to please call the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office at 850-651-7400.

As we prepare to enter the middle of what has been an unusually quiet Hurricane season so far, officials continue to prepare…just in case.
Jeff Masters, director of meteorology for the website Weather Underground, says cooler temperatures could mean that a cycle of warmer water in the Atlantic that started in 1995 is ending. That warming trend was a major factor in some of the most active hurricane seasons on record, especially 1995 and 2005—the year of Hurricane Katrina.
I’ll have an in-depth interview next week on First News Now with our own Civil Defense Warden, Walton County Emergency Manager Jeffery M. Goldberg. Goldberg served at the Palm Beach County Emergency Management Agency before coming to Walton County and he was the Emergency Management Director at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and was responsible for developing the LoC's emergency management program. While in DC, he worked with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, chaired the Capitol Hill Task Force on Emergency Management, and was involved in other response and recovery programs on Capitol Hill including the State of the Union Address and the anthrax incident.
We’ll have a conversation with Director Goldberg on Emergency Preparedness next week and discuss things you can do to help your family survive and thrive in a variety of emergencies. That’s coming up next week on First News Now.
