Share The Shelter
Benefiting partners, Shelter House and Alaqua Animal Refuge, recently announced that the Share the Shelter Music Fest raised nearly $34,000 for both charities.
The day long music fest that was held on Saturday, September 29, attracted nearly 800 attendees and featured several area artists, food vendors and musicians. Four legged friends were also invited to this year’s event and even walked away with a dog “swag bag” courtesy of Furry Fanatics.
Laurie Hood, Founder and Executive Director of Alaqua says they recognize that there is a circle of violence that affects the entire family. She says Alaqua has targeted programs to recognize abuse, provide law enforcement with tools for successful investigations, provide education on the correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence and ultimately, prosecute the abusers. Hood says Share the Shelter is such an important event for both organizations and the partnership is key to making a difference.
Michelle Sperzel, Executive Director, Shelter House says people often forget that domestic violence touches the entire family, including the family pets. When a woman leaves an abusive home and starts a new life she is not only saving her own life, she is saving the lives of her children and animals. She says they are proud of this year’s fest and its success and look forward to next year!
Visit the Share the Shelter Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SharetheShelter) for updates and the save the date for fall 2013 to be announced soon. Also, the exclusive 2012 Share the Shelter CD, featuring all this year’s musical artists as well as a bonus track from Say the Word Poetry, is still for sale and can be purchased online.
