Child Death Case
William Eddins, State Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit; says defendant Nicole Allen entered a plea of no contest to Principal to Third Degree Murder of two year old Logan Sherwin and nine counts of Child Neglect of Logan and one count of Child Neglect of his three year old sister Olivia Sherwin.
Logan Sherwin died on December 29, 2011 of brain injuries associated with a four inch fracture to the rear of his skull approximately eight hours after the defendant called 911 on December 28, 2011 from the home of she and the children's father Grant Sherwin in Crestview
Both Ms. Allen and Grant Sherwin were initially arrested by the Crestview Police Department on December 29, 2011 for charges of Aggravated Child Abuse and the Office of the 'State Attorney added the charge of Third Degree Murder and charges of Child Neglect after an autopsy and further investigation. The Child Neglect charges arose from a routine practice of Ms. Allen and Mr. Sherwin locking the toddler aged children in the home alone whenever they would go out; sometimes for hours on end.
Grant Sherwin entered a plea on January 23, 2013 of no contest to one (1) count of Child Abuse and ten (10) counts of Child Neglect and is set for sentencing on May 29,2013. He faces a maximum sentence of twenty (20) years prison. Nicole Allen faces a maximum sentence of sixty-five (65) years prison and is to be sentenced July 8, 2013.

Dewyne Douglass was honored May 16 for his nine years of service on the CHELCO Board of Trustees.
He served three terms as the trustee for District 4, which covers much of northern Walton County and a piece of Holmes County. Douglass, a lifelong Walton resident, says he become a trustee because of the community. He says cooperative means people working with people.
Douglass, who once worked for CHELCO and is also a former Walton County School Board member, congratulated the district’s new trustee, James Hagan. This discussion will allow the County to continue to prepare for RESTORE Act funding that should become available in the future.
In addition, the members heard from a variety of speakers on issues that face the Gulf Coast Counties within the state. A common theme throughout the presentations with the impact of watershed on not only the 23 counties affected by the BP oil spill, but the importance of watershed throughout the state. According to Commissioner Comander, “When thinking of RESTORE Act funds, we tend to lean towards the 23 affected counties. The presentations that were given at this meeting really helped to show that watershed issues not only affect these counties, but are important statewide. Local and statewide watershed maintenance is important to maintaining a healthy and viable ecosystem and environment.”
Currently, Commissioner Comander has been working with representatives from Okaloosa County to develop a partner approach when looking at potential RESTORE projects that could affect and improve the areas local watershed.
In addition to the meeting, Commissioner Comander toured Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center located in Key West. The center focused on teaching adults and children about the importance of maintaining the Gulf of Mexico and the importance of protecting Florida’s ecosystem and environment.
