WCSO Nets “Big Fish” After Meth Lab Discovery

They caught a catfish and so far it looks like he has been cooking. Tuesday July 7th investigators with the Walton County Sheriff’s made contact with a man at a home on Ward Road near DeFuniak Springs regarding the manufacturing of methamphetamine. The homeowner, Kenneth “Catfish” Peacock, answered the door. Peacock agreed to speak to investigators and consent to search the residence was given. Amanda Vanderecken, 33, was also in the home at the time and consented to the search as well.

Further investigation revealed two plastic containers inside a cabinet inside the home with a small amount of suspected finished product methamphetamine inside. The substance was field tested and tested positive for methamphetamine.

Investigators also located two bags under the seat of a kitchen bench seat inside the home containing the following items: lye, ammonium nitrate, muriatic acid, coffee filters, a funnel, several sets of pliers, a small glass measuring cup, and charcoal lighter fluid. There was also a plastic bottle with approximately 300 grams of suspected methamphetamine oil.

Both Peacock and Vanderecken were placed under arrest and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine over 14 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

“This has been a long time coming and it’s unfortunate we have to keep dealing with this individual over and over again,” said Sheriff Mike Adkinson. “But, we owe it to our community and citizens to keep these kinds of drugs out of our neighborhoods. This is another job well done by our VICE/Narcotics Team.”

Kenneth “Catfish” Peacock has been arrested in 2007, three times in 2010, and once 2011. Charges for those arrests range from fraud to possession and the manufacturing of meth to felony violation of probation. Vanderecken also has a criminal history in Walton County.

Motorcycle Fatality

A motorcycle rider crashed and died in a two vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in Okaloosa County. The FHP says 86-year-old Eva Carasso, of Destin, was on an access road driving a Lincoln Town Car and attempting to make a left turn onto Independence Road. A 1999 Harley-Davidson, ridden by 43-year-old Kenyon Nessel, of Navarre, was westbound on Independence Road. The bike’s rider laid the motorcycle down in an attempt to avoid a collision, the two struck. The crash is under investigation. Charges are pending the investigation. Both were wearing safety devices and alcohol is not a factor.

WCSB Meeting

The Board approved an agreement with the PAEC to begin ending the agreement for computing services. The approved agreement starts the final year until there will be no agreement. The Board also approved a continuation of last year’s salary schedule so the employees can still be paid. The District is setting up negotiations. The new Union Rep, Mark Chavez, was present and said they are in discussions to find a date. The Board approved the personnel recommendations. Board member Mark Davis recused himself for Donna Davis. That was the only conflict. Kim Kirby and BIll Eddins were not present.

While discussing an expulsion, the Board agreed to give a 7th grader a chance to attend an alternative school instead of being removed from school completely. Board members Jason Catalano and Mark Davis understood the policy of requiring an expulsion for a drug case, but also understood what might have been just younger students caught up in a situation where they were scared and made the wrong choice. It was noted there was a possession, but not use and the girl had been given the marijuana. On the other side, the discussion was about the seriousness of the situation, that the girl did not chose to turn the drugs in and not knowing if she and her parents truly understood the seriousness. In this case the student was under the ESE Program. Superintendent Anderson noted the students are not criminals and chose to violate the Board’s policy. So for this student and another student, the Board stepped out of the normal requirement and allowed for the girls to stay in school, but attend one of the alternative choices. Neither the students nor their parents were present; though they could have chosen to meet with the Board in either an open or closed hearing. Names are never used and the details are not made public except for the very limited and guarded discussion. In a separate expulsion hearing a student had used a taser.

Corporal Gregory Braddam Receives Correctional Deputy of the Quarter

Nominated by his peers and superiors Corporal Greg Braddam has received accolades for Detention Deputy of the Year. This is an honor within the Walton County Sheriff’s Office family and Corporal Braddam has earned it in many ways.

Corporal Braddam has been instrumental in building and installing the new camera system at the Walton County Jail facility, which will benefit the agency greatly. The system will be extremely helpful as an inmate management tool as well as providing safety for our deputies.

Braddam has worked long hours and has saved the agency a great deal of taxpayer dollars over the cost of having a contractor perform this service. He does not shy away from any task, graciously serving on the New World Team (our new CAD system) and represents WCSO well.

Corporal Braddam is always looking for ways to save the agency money or streamline any task. He exhibits the characteristics of the Agency Vision Statement such as improvement and innovation and displays his commitment to excellence with every task.

We are very proud of him and his dedication to serving his community. We appreciate any publication of this great award.
