CLARY-GLENN FUNERAL HOME
Today is the 217th day of the year. There are 148 days left in the year.
On August 5, 1962, movie actress Marilyn Monroe is found dead in her home in Los Angeles. She was discovered lying nude on her bed, face down, with a telephone in one hand. Empty bottles of pills, prescribed to treat her depression, were littered around the room. After a brief investigation, Los Angeles police concluded that her death was “caused by a self-administered overdose of sedative drugs and that the mode of death is probable suicide.”

WALTON
Walton County Public Information Officer Louis Svelah announced yesterday that the official 13-star Flag of the Confederacy (commonly called the Stars & Bars) has been posted at the War Memorial in Defuniak Springs to replace the temporary 7-star flag that has flown in the interim.
Commissioners recently voted unanimously to keep a Confederate flag flying over the memorial after repeated efforts to have it removed failed. Commissioners exchanged the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia for the official Flag of the Confederacy in a compromise.
The Crestview City Council meets Thursday night to discuss the status of the Confederate flag over the Bill Lundy War Memorial. Crestview Mayor David Cadle ordered it removed on July 3rd. However, the City Council ordered it returned on July 27th until they decide its fate.
Florida Forest Service Sends Crew to Battle Wildfires in California
Local firefighters are in California today helping to battle wildfires.
The Florida Forest Service sent a crew of 20 wildland firefighters to assist wildfire suppression efforts in northern California. Wildland firefighters are currently battling more than a dozen large wildfires in northern California, including the quickly-growing 60,000 acre Rocky Fire, west of Sacramento.
Three forest service employees from our area have been sent; one from Holmes County and two from Bay County.
Florida Forest Service’s initial-attack hand crew will join other crews in northern California, where they will receive assignment to the highest priority wildfire. The crews will battle mountainous wildfires in northern California using hand tools like shovels, axes and rakes to manually create a fire break or fire line around the wildfire perimeter.
Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam said, “Throughout the years, many out-of-state wildland firefighters have aided our efforts in Florida when our state has been overwhelmed by many large uncontrolled wildfires. Today’s brave Florida Forest Service wildland firefighters are proud to return the favor to help protect life, property and natural resources in California.”

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SALES TAX HOLIDAY KICKS OFF THIS FRIDAY
The state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday begins this Friday, August 7 and lasts through August 16. This 10-day extension equals the longest back-to-school shopping holiday since it was first started in 1998 and allows shoppers two full weekends to complete their buying needs.
During this holiday period, Florida law directs that no sales tax or local option tax (also known as discretionary sales surtax) will be collected on purchases of:
• Clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $100 or less per item,
• Certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item, and
• Personal computers and certain computer-related accessories on the first $750 of the sales price, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use.
According to the National Retail Federations’ Retail Insight Center Monthly Consumer Survey of more than 6,400 adults nationwide, 29 percent of households with school-age kids plan to spend more than last year for back-to-school, compared with nearly 24 percent who said the same thing this time last year. As for college students and their families, nearly three in 10 plan to spend more this summer, up from 23 percent last year.

GAS PRICES FALL AT FASTEST RATE SINCE JANUARY
Gas prices are falling at the fastest rate since January due to cheaper crude oil costs and the resolution of some refinery issues in the western United States. The national average price of gas has dropped for 18 days in row for a total of 12 cents per gallon. Today’s national average price of gas is $2.65 per gallon, which is the lowest average for this time of year since 2009.
Gas prices averaged $2.75 per gallon in July, which was the lowest average for the month since 2010. Today’s average gas prices are about 86 cents per gallon less than a year ago. The national average has dropped about 15 cents per gallon since hitting a 2015 high of $2.80 on June 15. This is the second year in a row that gas prices dropped in July. Last year, average prices dropped 16 cents per gallon during the month before eventually plummeting $1.65 per gallon though January.
Gas prices could drop more dramatically after Labor Day as people take fewer road trips and use less gasoline, which could lead to an even larger glut in petroleum supplies. In addition, stations in many parts of the country can switch over to less expensive winter-blend gasoline on September 15. The Southeastern and Central United States are the two regions most likely to see a large number of gas stations offering prices around $2 per gallon this winter.
There are a number of factors that could keep gas prices from falling as expected, such as major refinery disruptions, higher oil costs, a major hurricane or conflict overseas.
Florida gas prices averaged $2.63 in July. Prices have declined for 26 consecutive days, for a total of 16 cents since July 8.
