Garbage
At the height of hurricane season, Waste Management is carefully tracking all potential weather events, including Hurricane Isaac. The main garbage and waste service provider for Walton County , Waste Management encourages you to remember to take the following safety precautions:
-
Secure garbage and recycling containers. Residents should place empty containers in a location away from open spaces.
- Bundle and tie down all loose trash, such as tree limbs or wood planks. Place these materials in a location where the debris cannot become hazards to homes and automobiles in high winds.
- After any strong storm, separate household garbage, such as food, diapers and regular household waste, from debris caused by high winds, hail and rain.
Domenica Farmer, senior district manager, Waste Management Fort Walton Beach, Panama City and Pensacola says residents will be assured that Waste Management’s garbage and trash collection services, as well as recycling, will continue according to an area’s designated schedule unless weather prohibits operational safety. If service is suspended for your area, Waste Management will resume operations as soon as safety permits.
After any severe weather event, Waste Management strongly recommends that all residential customers separate their household garbage, such as food, diapers and regular household waste, from debris created by severe weather events and their aftermath. They ask that customers bag their household garbage and place it at the curb. Storm debris, including refrigerators, household appliances, bags of clothing, tree limbs, carpet and carpet padding, and wood fencing, should be placed in a separate pile or piles.
Separating household waste from storm debris will allow Waste Management employees to collect your household garbage more quickly and safely, helping prevent foul odors and safety hazards that would be created by mixing your household garbage with storm debris. The separation is also necessary to allow Waste Management to collect household waste and to permit others to collect storm debris in accordance with arrangements made by counties and municipalities with contractors independent from Waste Management.

Scam Reminder
A Fort Walton Beach resident reports getting a call Monday morning from someone claiming to be her grandson and asking for money for an emergency. The resident was familiar with this common scam and hung up
on the individual but wanted us to let local residents know these calls have resurfaced.
This scam has appeared repeatedly in Okaloosa County and other areas in the last two years. It typically involves a phone call from someone saying that “their grandson” or another relative is in jail and “has asked them to call to get bond money” or some version of that story. Other times it’s that a family member’s wallet was stolen and they’re stranded with no cash.
Well-meaning local residents trying to help out someone in need have been victimized by these type pleas. Please be aware of these criminal enterprises if you are targeted. Also, never give out personal information to a
stranger.
If you think you’ve been the victim of a scam or fraud, contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Fraud Hotline at 850-651-7674.

Bay Area Food Bank Prepares for Isaac
As we weather the storm, agencies are already planning for the needs after. This includes food supplies to those who might not have any after utility loss, work stoppage or closed stores and supply lines. And remember the Letter Carrier’s Food Drive last spring? Now it really pays off.
As a member of the Feeding America network, Bay Area Food Bank is working with national disaster relief staff, the Director of the Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans and the Director of the Florida Association of Food Banks to prepare for landfall of Hurricane Isaac. Staff members are also participating in coordination calls with emergency management authorities to understand where help is needed.
The food bank has several tractor trailer loads of food supplies and water stored from the National Association of Letter Carrier's Food Drive collected in Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama and Santa Rosa County in
Florida during the May food drive.
In addition to already stocked supplies, the food bank's two warehouses have space available for more than six additional tractor trailer loads (approximately 200,000 meals) of frozen food and room for well over fifteen
tractor trailer loads (approximately 500,000 meals) in the dry goods warehouse spaces.
Following Hurricane Katrina, Bay Area Food Bank distributed over 2 million pounds of food in the first 14 days after the storm thanks to donated transportation in the form of pickup trucks and trailers from area churches.
The food bank now has a fleet of 10 tractor trailers and box trucks capable of transporting over 100,000 meals per day to serve areas in need. Should more support be required, Feeding America partners stand ready to provide additional trucks and staff.
Executive Director, Dave Reaney says, as always, they hope the storm subsides and causes no serious damage; but, the food bank is prepared to help if people are in need.
