LOG TRUCK OVERTURNS, CRASHES
Another log truck has overturned and crashed, this time, in Bay County.
Troopers say 29-year-old Timothy Zimmerman was eastbound on SR 388 east of Burnt Mill Creek Road around 10:00 Friday morning when his 2005 Kenworth tractor and trailer traveled out of the eastbound lane and onto the eastbound grass shoulder. As Zimmerman steered back onto the roadway and the truck straightened near the roadway centerline, the load shifted causing a weight transfer to the vehicle's left.
Due to the weight transfer, the truck traveled into the westbound lane and overturned onto it's left side, blocking the westbound lane. Traffic was re-routed using the eastbound lane during the blockage. Zimmerman escaped with no injuries.

ALABAMA LEADS NATION IN LIGHTNING DEATHS
Alabama is one of the most deadly states when it comes to being struck by lightning.
Four people have died in Alabama from being struck by lighting in the last couple of weeks. A couple in Covington County died June 23 while they were outside covering their chickens, and a 12-year-old girl died in Fort Morgan July 5 while on the beach.
A 73-year-old was killed while
picking blueberries in Autauga
County on July 23.
Miguel Belnar and Sharon G. Fletcher were killed in Opp, AL when lightning struck a tree and ran down a branch and hit them.
Covington County Coroner Norman
Hobson said at the time that the couple had gone outside to cover up chickens
in a metal cage when they were struck.
According to the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an estimated 50 people die in the United States
each year from lightning. So far, 17 people have died in 2015 with Alabama and Florida
topping the list with three apiece. Those 17 deaths have happened since April 9
and most happened during an outdoor leisure activity like fishing, walking and
hiking.
Data from NOAA shows that 322 people
died in the United States due to lightning from 2005 to 2014. Florida
accounted for the majority of those with 47, and Alabama accounted for 10 deaths during that
time.
Remember, if you hear thunder, the lightning is relatively close, and the next bolt could be
right on top of you even if you can’t see
it or even if it is in
the distance.”
If you are outside while it is storming you should get inside a building or a vehicle as quickly as possible.

AAA: HOW TO SAVE ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING
The average Florida family with children K-12 plans to spend $755.33 on electronics, apparel, shoes and other school needs, according to a recent AAA Consumer Pulse™ survey. One-third of parents (33%) feel they are better off financially over last year, thanks in part to wage increases (59%) and lower gas prices (37%), but the majority (58%) are looking for a deal when shopping. Shoppers heading to the store for school supplies can keep costs down by planning ahead, looking for discounts, and skipping unnecessary items.
“Families are looking for ways to trim expenses when it comes to back-to-school shopping,” said Belinda Dabrowski, Director of Partnership Development, AAA – The Auto Club Group. Here are a few more ways to save a few dollars:
AAA Back-to-School Shopping Tips:
· Shop at Home: Once you create your back-to-school shopping list, take an at-home inventory. School lists often carry-over items from the previous year, so make sure you aren’t buying multiples of things you already own.
· Spread Out Your Shopping: The majority of Florida parents (75%) begin their back-to-school shopping 1-4 weeks before school starts. Sometimes you will find better deals if you spread out your shopping and begin shopping earlier or wait until school starts. For instance, often times retail stores will have deep discounts on clothing in the fall in order to make room for winter inventory.
· Do Your Research: As you create your list, check sales and find which retailers have the best price on each item. Stick to the list to stay on budget.
· Shop Online: Before you buy, pull out your phone. Sometimes you can find a better deal for the item online or at another store. Almost half of parents (47%) will use their smartphones or tablets to compare products and prices and 22 percent will use it to make a purchase.
· Shop Tax-Free: In Florida the back-to-school tax holiday starts August 7th and runs through August 16th. Parents can skip the tax on items from simple school supplies to clothing under $100. The break also applies to the sales tax on the first $750 of the price of laptop computers and certain other electronics for personal use.

Florida Forest Service Celebrates Smokey Bear’s 71st Birthday
This
Sunday, the Florida Forest Service will celebrate the 71st birthday of
Smokey Bear, the national symbol for wildfire prevention.
For
generations, the Smokey Bear campaign has been the cornerstone for effective
wildfire prevention education. Since 1944, Smokey Bear has been a recognized
symbol for the conservation and protection of America’s forests. Smokey
Bear’s message, “Only you can prevent wildfires,” has helped to reduce the
number of U.S.
acres burned by wildfires from about 22 million to 7 million annually.
Since
January, the Florida Forest Service has responded to 2,094 wildfires that have
burned 70,106 acres. More than 70 percent of all wildfires in Florida are caused by human carelessness and
are preventable.
Florida
State Forester Jim Karels said, “Smokey Bear’s message is as significant today
as it was 71 years ago. Careless wildfires unnecessarily endanger the lives of
citizens and wildland firefighters alike. They also occupy resources that could
otherwise be ready to fight naturally-caused wildfires, such as those caused by
lightning,”
Earlier
this week, Florida’s Commissioner of
Agriculture Adam Putnam dispatched personnel from Holmes and Bay Counties
to help combat wildfires in California.
