TRACTOR TRAILER OVERTURNS IN CITY LIMITS
By: T.H. Merritt
An early morning accident on I-10 at Hwy. 331 snarled traffic for a few hours Monday morning. Defuniak Springs Chief of Police Mark Weeks says an eastbound semi-trailer loaded with plastic spoons ran off the road around 2:20 AM, hit a sign and over corrected before overturning in the median. The rig came to rest on its side partially blocking the westbound lane for a few hours. The driver and a passenger received only minor injuries and were transported by Walton County EMS to Healthmark Regional Medical Center as a precaution. Traffic was cleared and the both westbound lanes were re-opened a few hours later.
Gov. Scott Directs Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Military Troops Killed in Tennessee Shooting
Governor Rick Scott has directed the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff in honor of the five service members who were murdered at recruiting centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee last week. This is effective immediately throughout the state of Florida until sunset on the day of the final military member’s date of interment.
On Saturday, Governor Scott issued an executive order directing Florida Adjutant General Michael Calhoun to take three immediate actions:
Relocate all Florida National Guard personnel at the state’s six storefront recruitment centers to the nearest Florida National Guard Armory until there are recommendations made to improve the security of store-front recruitment centers.
Begin discussions with local law enforcement agencies to arrange regular security checks for Florida National Guard Armories.
Ensure that all qualified full-time guardsmen are adequately armed for their personal protection. Full time guardsmen who do not have concealed weapons permits will have their applications expedited.
There are two National Guard armories located in our immediate area. One is in Crestview and the other in Bonifay. Florida National Guard Public Affairs Officer Lt. Justin Phillips told WZEP the Adjutant General is currently assessing how to best implement Governor Scott’s order.

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
RELEASES 2014 VITAL STATISTICS REPORT
The Florida Department of Health has released the 2014 Vital Statistics Report.. Annual reports summarize data from original birth, life and death records filed with the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics and provide a view of population health changes.
"Infant mortality and life expectancy are key measures of population health," said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. "Florida’s infant mortality continues to be the lowest in state history, while Florida’s life expectancy is higher than the national average.
The number of live births increased from 215,194 in 2013 to 219,905 in 2014. The infant mortality rate decreased to 6.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2014, the lowest rate in Florida's history. There were increases in the Hispanic and Black infant mortality rates, 4.4 to 4.9 and 10.6 to 11, respectively.
Life expectancy from birth decreased slightly from 79.3 to 79.2 years, yet increased for black men and women, as well as Hispanic women. Since 1970, life expectancy from birth in Florida has increased by eight years and remains above the US average.
Heart disease was the leading cause of death in Florida in 2014, followed closely by cancer. Lung disease, stroke and unintentional injury rounded out the top five causes of death. Excess weight contributes to preventable chronic diseases, like heart disease, lung disease and stroke, as well as cancer. The department says behaviors, social circumstances and physical environments are dominant determinants of health outcomes.
